One of the most overlooked films of the year and, unfortunately, I don’t think that bodes well for future entries in the franchise was Gavin Hood’s adaptation of Orson Scott Card’s classic: Ender’s Game. I reviewed it initially here, but I remain very pleased with the film and if I did have one complaint it would be that they seemed to bank very heavily on future films being able to explain things that only hardcore fans of the world would understand. That should not in any way keep you from checking this out when it hits Blu Ray in February. It looks like there’s no extended cut, but there is a lot of “making of” material, so that should be a bonus to fans like me. Below is the official press release from Summit Entertainment.
Summit Entertainment, a Lionsgate company, has officially announced that it will release on Blu-ray director Gavin Hood’s (X-Men Origins: Wolverine) latest film Ender’s Game (2013), starring Harrison Ford, Ben Kingsley, Abigail Breslin, Asa Butterfield, and Hailee Steinfeld. The release will be available for purchase online and in stores across the nation on February 11th.
Official synopsis: In the near future, a hostile alien race called the Formics have attacked Earth. If not for the legendary heroics of International Fleet Commander Mazer Rackham (Kingsley), all would have been lost. In preparation for the next attack, the highly esteemed Colonel Hyrum Graff (Ford) and the International Military are training only the best young minds to find the future Mazer.
Ender Wiggin (Butterfield), a shy but strategically brilliant boy, is recruited to join the elite. Arriving at Battle School, Ender quickly and easily masters increasingly difficult challenges and simulations, distinguishing himself and winning respect amongst his peers. Ender is soon ordained by Graff as the military’s next great hope, resulting in his promotion to Command School. Once there, he’s trained by Mazer Rackham himself to lead his fellow soldiers into an epic battle that will determine the future of Earth and save the human race.
