Killing Time – January 16, 2014

killing time

Let not the sands of time get in your lunch.
~Tony Hendra, “Deteriorata”

Killing Time history has been made.  I am pleased and somewhat smugly proud to announce that we have had our first hit from the recalcitrant, elusive French Guiana.  For those of you new to the site, French Guiana was the only country in South America not to visit the site and, having something of a geography obsession I wanted to color in that last bit of the map.  I have harassed French Guiana in this column for nearly six months.  I tried begging.  I tried insulting.  I slandered their President.  I figured out a hole in their border security and begged someone to sneak into the country via Suriname and hit up the site from an Internet hostel.  I have written about French Guiana so many times that at one point if you googled “French Guiana” this site would come up because Google’s search algorithm decided I was running a French Guiana blog.  Seriously, if someone did bop over the Moroni River and claim the country for KT, I will name an award after you and honor you annually as long as this site exists.  I am not sure how to express how proud I am to have annoyed an entire nation into visiting the site, but I would list it among the most exciting highlights of the blog’s first year.  Today we are all French Guianians…or whatever.

All hail French Guiana!!!
All hail French Guiana!!!

Other Killing Time milestones this week: The site passed 42,000 hits, 1,800 comments and the biggest change this week is Killing Time now is on Facebook.  There’s a link on the home page or you can search for us on Facebook or the direct link is http://facebook.com/killingtime2014.  Since nearly everything is easily postable (not a word, but should be) to Facebook now, there will be additional content there plus all the blog posts.

The most viewed post of the week, was Harrison Ford’s Latest vs. Greatest profile.  Ford is well on his way to having the most-viewed profile yet.  Appropriate, since he racked up the highest career score of any actor yet.

  1. Haha. I discovered your site for precisely the same reason– I have three countries in South America that haven’t come to my blog yet and I’m trying to find them. :-) The other two are Guyana and Suriname if you happen to have contacts.

    1. LOL, oh I wish I did. I started thinking that if I mentioned them a few times that they would succumb, but it took six months of devoting a section of this column to harassing, insulting, cajoling and research to finally get one hit and I’ve never got them back. I even figured out how to sneak over the border FROM Suriname. I got both Suriname and Guyana by chance and fairly early. The only advice I can offer is to give it time and write about enough topics that have global appeal or launch an all out assault on them to the point where Google gets confused as to the point of your entire site. I think mine will come up in French Guiana searches for quite some time. I wish you luck.
