My Favorite Scene: Thor The Dark World (2013) “Presto Chango Loki”

Of the franchises that make up the Marvel Cinematic Universe, I think my favorite (and I never would have thought this prior to the films’ release) is Thor.  I had no idea how they were going to take this guy with a winged helmet speaking in Shakespearean dialogue who lives in a magical castle at the end of a rainbow bridge and not make it utterly ridiculous.  Kenneth Brannagh set the tone with the first film and poked just enough fun at it so we weren’t taking it too seriously, but at the same time back-dooring the gravitas and richness of Asgard and regality of the characters so that when you needed the dramatic moment, it had the foundation required.

The second Thor film is much more grim than the first film, but the story and the entire phase 2 of the MCU is a darker epic leading to Avengers: Age of Ultron.  In the midst of the more serious moments though, you can always count on Loki.  Tom Hiddleston’s Loki has been one of the best surprises of the MCU and Thor 2 gave him much more leniency to use his shape-shifting powers.  This provided us with the film’s funniest moment where Loki shifts into a gung-ho Chris Evans as Captain America.  I think Evans must have had a blast sending himself up.  It’s a much-needed moment of humor in a darker epic, but totally in keeping with the personality of the god of mischief.

  1. Ben Kingsley’s Mandarin had a shot at being one of the greatest movie villains of all time. In fact, maybe he is one of the greatest, but only the first time you watch the first half of that film.

As it stands, I think the Mandarin was a sign that the creators of the MCU were very deliberately putting the heroes first. It’s strange that that would be such an innovation, but the history of comic books on film is a history of huge stars hamming it up as supervillains, and the MCU people have willfully gone in the opposite direction.

But there is such a thing as going too far. Up to now, the MCU has not contained many good villains, and Hiddleston’s Loki remains the only truly memorable, cool one. Obviously that’s going to change very soon.

    1. I think that is the fundamental difference in marvel and DC movies. If they’re making a Batman film, you ask who is the villain? In a Marvel movie, the villains have taken a back seat but it has knit the concept of a shared hero universe together. To me, the biggie they need to take another crack at is the Red Skull. He’s way too huge a villain to have less cool stuff than Whiplash.
