I know this is based on a series of novels by Jason Matthews, but if you substitute “Red Sparrow” for “Black Widow” it seems awfully familiar. If Marvel doesn’t kick up its game, this may be as close to a solo Widow film as we ever get. Read Coming Soon’s full synopsis below. Red Sparrow is coming in March 2018.
20th Century Fox has released the first trailer for Red Sparrow, the upcoming action thriller starring Academy Award winner Jennifer Lawrence. Check out the Red Sparrow trailer using the player below!
Dominika Egorova is many things. A devoted daughter determined to protect her mother at all costs. A prima ballerina whose ferocity has pushed her body and mind to the absolute limit. A master of seductive and manipulative combat.
When she suffers a career-ending injury, Dominika and her mother are facing a bleak and uncertain future. That is why she finds herself manipulated into becoming the newest recruit for Sparrow School, a secret intelligence service that trains exceptional young people like her to use their bodies and minds as weapons. After enduring the perverse and sadistic training process, she emerges as the most dangerous Sparrow the program has ever produced. Dominika must now reconcile the person she was with the power she now commands, with her own life and everyone she cares about at risk, including an American CIA agent who tries to convince her he is the only person she can trust.
Red Sparrow also stars Joel Edgerton, Matthias Schoenaerts, Charlotte Rampling, Mary-Louise Parker and Jeremy Irons.
Francis Lawrence, who previously directed Jennifer Lawrence in the final three Hunger Games movies, directs Red Sparrow from a screenplay by Justin Haythe (Revolutionary Road) based on the book by Jason Matthews. Chernin Entertainment is producing with Steve Zaillian and Garrett Basch is an executive producer.
Red Sparrow arrives in theaters on March 2, 2018.
I can’t see Marvel being bothered now, unfortunately.

It’s absolutely ridiculous. She’s played that part since 2010. She’s more than earned a solo film.

It’s still going to happen for sure, one of these days. Red Sparrow will not make a difference, even if it’s hugely successful. A Black Widow movie will be a comic book movie from Marvel Studios, with a totally different look and feel, and while it might deal with BW’s past, it won’t be an origin story.

Kari, I would be really interested in knowing if this is as much like Black Widow’s origin story as it seems like it is, so gimme a report after you peruse it!
