Killing Time – January 30, 2014

killing time

Time is an equal opportunity employer.  Each human being has exactly the same number of hours and minutes every day.  Rich people can’t buy more hours.  Scientists can’t invent new minutes.  And you can’t save time to spend it on another day.  Even so, time is amazingly fair and forgiving.  No matter how much time you’ve wasted in the past, you still have an entire tomorrow.
~Denis Waitely

Welcome back to the normal Killing Time weekly format after we had our Renaissance Film Awards last week.  The last time we met was a celebration of the effectiveness of our concerted, community-wide effort to harass the tiny South American country of French Guiana into visiting the site, thus enabling me to fill in the last empty space in my “Conquer South America” map.  You may think that this has sated my need for geographical conquest.  Perhaps it did for awhile, but then I pulled up my map of all the countries that have ever visited Killing Time:

And I’m thinking….what the heck is Greenland’s problem?  Look at it there.  Sitting up by Canada all big, white (suspiciously white) and owned by Denmark (to do what with?).  I think we need to have some quality time with Greenland.  I think we may be talking quite a bit about Greenland in upcoming weeks.  I can feel your enthusiasm from here.  Just as an interesting note, here are the top 25 countries that visit us here.  As a gesture of goodwill and appreciation, a canned ham will be sent to the leaders of each (not really, the finance department of KT has been leaving me increasingly profane voicemails).

Other Killing Time milestones this week: The site passed 46,000 hits, 1,900 comments and we had our busiest day in the history of the site last week, for reasons I wish I could take credit for somehow.  The French Guianans seem to be staying pat with their one pity visit, but we had our first visit from Ethiopia this week, so welcome to them.

The most viewed post of the week, was the newly-released first trailer for the fourth season of HBO’s Game of Thrones.

Killing Time – January 16, 2014

killing time

Let not the sands of time get in your lunch.
~Tony Hendra, “Deteriorata”

Killing Time history has been made.  I am pleased and somewhat smugly proud to announce that we have had our first hit from the recalcitrant, elusive French Guiana.  For those of you new to the site, French Guiana was the only country in South America not to visit the site and, having something of a geography obsession I wanted to color in that last bit of the map.   Continue reading Killing Time – January 16, 2014

Killing Time – November 14, 2013

Killing Time

Time is on my side….YES IT IS!
Mick Jagger

Here’s a tip if you generally have problems sleeping to begin with: a steady diet of American Horror Story and The Following will not improve the quality of whatever dreams you might have.  That’s my wisdom for all of you this week, and given that I (probably not coincidentally) have developed chronic stress migraines, will be it before we get into site business and general geekery.

Killing Time milestones this week: We blew past 35 and 36,000 hits;  1300 comments; and 1200 posts in a very busy week for the site post-Thor 2.

The most popular article of the week by far was Guardians of the Galaxy Details from Director James Gunn.

No new countries visited the site this week, but record traffic from Thailand for reasons that pass my understanding.  Also, Denmark, WTF?  I gave a shout out last week and you had your butt handed to you this week by Guernsey.  Guernsey just pimp-slapped your numbers.  You know who you should blame for that?  French Guiana.  They’re behind all that is evil in the world (I will provoke them!  Oh, oh, mistake me not….I will).

Killing Time – October 31, 2013

Killing Time

Time is more valuable than money. You can get more money, but you cannot get more time.
~Jim Rohn

Well, first the important things: welcome to all the new followers who seem to have flocked to my blog of reality stabbing in response to my posting that I was too sick to do a post about yelling at Ridley Scott.  One can only dare to dream what will happen when I can actually sit up here long enough to write the confusticated thing.  I’ve broken my record for new followers in a day and it’s not past lunch.  Maybe I should write all my posts with the aid of Nyquil…

Last week, as you no doubt have marked in your journals or etched on whatever tablet your community is using to keep records of important events, I joined Audible.  Yes.  I have embraced now not just the electronic book but the spoken one.  What was once heresy has now become a 24/7 effort to be able to have books flowing into my various sensory holes.  In week one I listened to three books and read four, so I think the experiment is working.

Killing Time milestones this week: Despite my plucky little intro, this has been one of the slowest weeks on the site in recent memory and the only one where we haven’t broken 1000.  We’re poised at 34k, but have not yet smashed through it.  This, as in all things, may be laid squarely at the feet of French Guiana.

The most popular article of the week for the second week in a row was a summary of what TV Shows Have Been Renewed or Canceled This Season Thus Far.

Grenada has been taken by the Killing Time phenomenon and become our 148th nation to visit, a taking accomplished far more smoothly than Reagan ever managed it.  Too soon?  Probably too soon.

You know who didn’t stop by this week?  If you answered French Guiana, then you’ve been privvy to my growing mad fixation on the tiny  South American dot that is preventing me from coloring in all of that continent in the giant map we keep in the rumpus room of the KT Lair (like your lair doesn’t have a rumpus room with a theatrically large map, don’t judge me).  At the risk of sounding repetitive….my friends in Suriname….the Maroni River which borders you and French Guiana is hideously secured.  It’s a national problem.  You would be helping them SEE that!  You swim the river, make your way to an Internet hostel, crank up KT, hit refresh on a couple of articles and then cartwheel your way back to Suriname.  Or look for a job there, because actually the jobless rate in Suriname is not good and French Guiana is ostensibly in the Euro Zone as a French protectorate.  What?  This isn’t common knowledge?
