FILMSGIVING 2017 – 4 Movies; 1 Theater Holiday (mini-reviews included)

turkey
I don’t celebrate Thanksgiving.  It isn’t that there aren’t things in my life that I’m thankful for; there are.  It’s not that I don’t have people I love who wouldn’t bend over backward to show me to their table; I do.  The problem is, the person who should be there sharing it with me passed away a few years ago.  Holidays are the traditions we make with the people we love, but what happens when the people die?  I suppose the traditions could live on if there were more people to see them through, but mine died with my wife.  The first year, I just survived the holidays.  The second year they made me miserable.  By the third year, I’d had enough so I decided to invent new traditions.  I didn’t want to spend another Thanksgiving immersed in the routine (and to be honest….I hate turkey), so thus was born FILMSGIVING! My Favorite Scene: WKRP in Cincinnati Season One (1978) “Turkeys Away!”

I cannot believe it took me until year five of Killing Time to feature this during Thanksgiving week.  WKRP in Cincinnati was not a great sitcom (it would qualify as one today given the lowered standards) in an age of classic sitcoms, but it was a solid show.  It does, however, have one of the all-time best Thanksgiving moments in TV history.  The country’s most inept radio station decided to hold a turkey giveaway as part of a Thanksgiving promotion and the station manager decided to jazz it up by having the turkeys dropped from a helicopter onto the waiting crowd below.  Unfortunately for the manager, the crowd, and the turkeys….he was ignorant of a simple fact he learns (read below) by the end of the episode.  Happy Thanksgiving week, readers!

In Theaters This Week (12/2/2016) – Jackie

Jackie, Jackie Kennedy, Natalie Portman

Each Thursday we look at what is going to be coming out in theaters this weekend, show you the trailers for the big releases, predict the box office winner and just generally give you enough of a carrot to pull you through the rest of the work week.  December 2nd is a really odd release date in that only one movie is really coming out (there are some limited releases), and most theaters won’t even pick it up….so I hope you didn’t do what I did and saw everything over Thanksgiving. Site Note: Back to Schedule Tomorrow

I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving.  I needed a break from staring at a computer screen, so apologize for the lack of posts, but in the upcoming week look for a special epic review of The Arrival, Moana, Hacksaw Ridge and The Edge of Seventeen.  My Favorite Scene this week will look at The Big Short.  There are some new trailers headed your way, achievement/ trophy guide for Final Fantasy XV (which releases Tuesday), and remember to vote in the “Favorite Harry Potter” movie poll.  It will run until December 12th.  The following poll will mirror what we did last year with Star Wars Episode VII.  We’re going to have a community review poll, where you can rate your score from 1-10 after you view Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

In Theaters This Week (11/23/2016) – Moana, Allied, and Bad Santa 2

Allied, Brad Pitt, Marion Cotillard, Brad Pitt

Each Thursday we look at what is going to be coming out in theaters this weekend, show you the trailers for the big releases, predict the box office winner and just generally give you enough of a carrot to pull you through the rest of the work week.  November 23rd is the odd Wednesday opening weekend during Thanksgiving week proper, and three more movies join the seven that opened Friday to try to entertain families desperate to find something to do together where they don’t have to talk about the 2016 Election.
