One of the things I was hoping we’d get with the upcoming The Dark Knight Trilogy Ultimate Collector’s Edition Blu Ray set was a discussion about Ledger, his incredible performance as the Joker and how his death between filming ending and the movie’s release impacted the cast and crew and the direction of the trilogy. There seems to be almost a code of silence about it from Nolan‘s troupe. They’ve said very measured things at the time and then have never really addressed it. It remains a tragic loss for anyone who loves movies that we didn’t get to see more of Ledger. I pity whomever has to play the Joker next (and someone will and sooner than you’d think or like). The shoes he’ll be stepping into are unfillable. The best strategy is to be like the Joker himself and reinvent the character. The Joker constantly changes. He’s chaos; anarchy. He wouldn’t remain the same anyway. Ledger didn’t try to do Nicholson’s Joker; that’s one of the main reasons he succeeded. Any actor following him would be wise to do the same.
