2013 – 2014 New TV Shows Canceled and Pick-Ups as of 10/22/13

abc, cbs, nbc, fox, cw

Ok boob tube fans, we’re a month into the TV season and most shows have premiered.  Some have already fallen by the wayside; some have already been assured a full season.  Here’s your complete scorecard as of today (no shooting the messenger):

* FOX has (wisely) picked up Andy Samberg’s police comedy Brooklyn Ninety-Nine for a full season order.

* ABC has picked up Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. for a full season, but the only surprise there was that it did not already have one.  It may as well renew it for three or four more seasons.

* NBC canceled Welcome to the Family after three episodes.

* On the theory that I may have an audience of women who watch this, America’s Next Top Model renewed for “Cycle” 21…whatever that means.  No, I don’t want to know!

* NBC canceled Ironside after three episodes.  Somewhere Raymond Burr is laughing his dead butt off….why did that even pop into my head….

* CBS has given Mom, The Millers, and Robin Williams’ The Crazy Ones full-season orders.

* CBS canceled We are Men after two episodes at least allowing it to fulfill the plurality implicit in its title.

* Not a new show, but FOX already renewed The Simpsons for its 26th season.

* NBC (sagely and wisely) has ordered a full season of James Spader’s The Blacklist.

* ABC canceled Lucky 7 before I figured out what it was.

* HBO renewed Boardwalk Empire for season 5.

* F/X renewed Wilfred for season 4.

* And in a move…albeit a tiny move…away from the abyss of insanity that has become people watching TV, A&E canceled Hoarders.  So stop nominating your in-laws.

My Favorite Scene: Gladiator (2000)

Gladiator is just awesome.  It contains an inherent awesomeness that allows it to get away with the fact that it steals literally every piece of its plot from better movies.  It gets away with the fact that Oliver Reed drank himself to death during production and they ghoulishly CGI’d him in to finish his scenes.  It doesn’t get away with it for everyone and I know many people who haaaate this movie’s guts and it is far from Ridley Scott’s best work.  Morevoer it sent Scott off on a epic-making tangent that he’s still trying to work his way back from. But…he fights a tiger!  A TIGER!  But that’s not even the best scene.  The best scene is when he leads his fellow gladiators to victory in a battle in which they were supposed to all die, gets reintroduced to the man who killed his emperor, his wife and his child, and Russell Crowe slow turns and delivers the most eloquent “I am coming to $*)# you up!” speech in movie history.

Star Wars Episode VII Still in Summer 2015 Plus Darth Vader TV Specials!?!

Based pretty much off the leaked schedule below, though Disney has confirmed they’re keeping Episode VII in the summer and not moving it to November as had been thought the last few months.  The biggest news may bye the plan to feature specials about Darth Vader.  Animated?  Live-action little mini-movies?  I’d like a mini-series about the Purge with unsure Anakin new in the suit but strong in his powers still in a way we’ve never gotten to see Vader in the suit.  Then there’s the most important question….can James Earl Jones record enough dialogue (all of the English language) so we can use his voice via computer program forever, OR can we design a computer program to make anyone sound like James Earl Jones.  I don’t program software.  Go.

NONONONONONO! Cars 3???? NONONONONO!!!

is-pixar-developing-cars-3

Remember earlier today that story I was going to have to post that was going to make me want to punch things?  This’d be it.  Cars 2 marked the end of Pixar as magic.  It’s in a slump and things behind the scenes are not sounding great, but it may right the ship and produce classics again, but it’s not flawless and up until Cars 2 it had been.  I loved the first Cars.  Then I heard they were making a sequel.  Then I heard the plot of the sequel and died a little inside.  Then I saw a trailer for the sequel and began to feel the free fall.  Then ten minutes into the movie, my sister went to tell some kid to shut up for being too loud and I really was having more fun listening to the kid.

Disney made Cars Land for it’s California Adventure theme park.  It forced out a Cars as Planes – Planes animated feature that tanked this summer.  And now…now it looks like they may make a third film?  This is not Toy Story!  This  is not even Shrek!  STOP IT AND START WRITING NEW MOVIES!  The below abomination is from Geek Tyrant.

According to Michael Wallis, who has worked as an historical consultant and voice actor on the two previous movies, they are. While doing a radio interview with with WGBZ in Alton, IL he let the details slip, saying,

“Cars 3 we’re coming back to the road. And we’re coming back to 66 into 99. That’s the road that runs right through Central California.”

Wallis is the author of a book called Route 66: The Mother Road, and also lent his voice to the Sheriff in the first two Cars movies. This is not an official confirmation of a third Cars film, but it looks like they’re in the process of developing it.

Pixar has already carved out release dates for three films that haven’t been announced–June 16, 2017, November 22, 2017, and June 15, 2018. I imagineCars 3 could easily fill one of those spots.
