The Hobbit An Unexpected Journey

It is one of the great bafflements of my time as a movie reviewer that I actually have to defend the first installment of The Hobbit trilogy.  I’ve never been more dumbstruck by critical backlash than I have been over the reception An Unexpected Journey received.  I don’t want to spend my entire review on it, so let’s play whack-a-mole with the most parroted complaints. 71st Golden Globes Nominees Announced (along with Killing Time picks)

Golden globes
The Golden Globes, probably the most telling Oscar herald, announced its nominees this morning.  The 71st Golden Globe Awards will be broadcast live from the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California on January 13, 2014, by NBC. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler will co-host the show for the second year in a row.

American Hustle and 12 Years as a Slave continue to dominate the early awards.  It looks like Best Picture is going to be a showdown between the two, if the early indicators hold true.

Best Video Games of 2013 Montage

Here’s a very cool montage of some of gaming’s best moments from 2013.  Though a landmark year in terms of heralding in the next generation, the actual quality of games this year was a sharp dip from the previous few.  That’s in large part due to the generation switch and from the odd lack of blockbuster launch titles on either the Xbox One or Playstation 4.  To me, Bioshock Infinite is Game of the Year, hands down.  It’s not only one of the best games of 2013; it’s one of the best games I’ve ever played.  Here’s some thoughts from the video’s creator: Malcolm Klock.  What was your favorite game this year?
