Killing Time – April 10, 2014

killing time

“Lost time is never found again.”
― Benjamin Franklin

I’ve been thinking about the site a lot this week (not only because maintaining it eats my free time like tasty snacks) and how different it is than what I had originally envisioned it being.  As it stands now, KT is a news site, more or less.  I’m doing journalism for the most part with some critical analysis thrown in for good measure.  And that’s all well and good.  I like being the guy who gets to tell you the cool thing I just heard.  Shorter pieces fit my schedule better.  I’m able to deliver 3-5 a day usually and this has varying degrees of success with the readers.

I’d like to hear from you a little bit, because this WILL impact how I shape the site in the next few months.  What parts do you like, are there features you really look for; do you like the news aspect of the site?  Would you like to see more op/ed type pieces; more creative writing.  Not stories, per se, but longer articles?  Would you like more reviews?  Would you like the site to go all reviews and start reviewing other areas of media with more regularity?  Give me your thoughts here.  We’re in one of our downward swings of popularity so that always makes me think of what can be improved.  You are the people reading all of this.  Give me your two cents here in the comments, via Twitter @sleeplessdave or on the Facebook page https:facebook.com/justkillingtime2014.

Killing Time milestones this week: The site passed 68,000 hits this week, 1675 posts and 75 Twitter followers.  Facebook getting schooled by Tumblr as the KT Tumblrs passed the Facebookers this week.  OH!  It’s on now……no?  Ok, trying to drum up business.  The geography stays Greenland-free STILL, which I’m beginning to suspect is the result of a French Guianan smear campaign….however, that may be massively paranoid….OR IS IT???

The most viewed post of the week was my a more detailed look at the upcoming Batman: Arkham Knight.

  1. I think you have a terrific site as is. If I had to make a suggestion it would be that you should branch out a little from your reviews and regular features. Write more essays. Let your muse take you where it takes you. I guarantee you’ll find that state of mind fulfilling and productive. I am waiting for your Tim Burton Latest vs. Greatest, BTW. You might want to give that feature a bit more flexibility. If a director has only made ten movies, do their best five vs. their most recent five.
Also, more book reviews would be great. Movies are THE art form of the modern age, but we need to cling to the contemplation afforded by books in order to counteract our bombastic times. That is all.

    1. LvG is moving to weekends rather than mid-week when I have the least time to write, but Burton’s is prepped. I just need to fill it in. Shortening to five for people like David Fincher or Chris Nolan who I’d otherwise be years from being able to do is a great idea. This is why I asked for ideas. I love the regular features, but maybe I do need to do more op/ed, essay types instead of five news articles a day. I do like doing that, but there’s so much I want to do I don’t do it as well as I’d like. I may post more articles directly to Facebook or Tumblr for news and commentary and try to focus on getting back to writing pieces like I did when I first started out. Book reviews are good feedback. I have read 61 books already this year (I only know because I set a GoodReads goal of 250 for 2014). Thanks, Peter. I really appreciate the ideas and any that any others might have. I wish this was somehow my job but as it has to work in and around a very unfortunately real and busy life, I don’t see that happening. I’ve been doing so much gaming recently too that video game reviews should be going up also.
