Perhaps the fall’s most-anticipated show was officially rolled out during the first episode of the return of 24. Gotham was originally going to be a story of young Jim Gordon’s rise through the GCPD, but has expanded into a time capsule epic of the city at a time when Bruce Wayne is just beginning to contemplate the path that will lead him to the Batcave and many of his arch-foes are beginning to rise. FOX has not disclosed the number of episodes, but has confirmed a full season order for the freshman drama. Here’s hoping it takes a page from Arrow. If it does, we could have an entirely unique take on the Bat mythos and something truly special.“Gotham” is an origin story of the great DC Comics super villains and vigilantes, revealing an entirely new chapter that has never been told. From executive producer/writer Bruno Heller (“The Mentalist,” “Rome”), “Gotham” follows one cop’s rise through a dangerously corrupt city teetering on the edge of evil and chronicles the birth of one of the most popular super heroes of our time.
“Gotham” is based upon characters published by DC Comics and is produced by Warner Bros. Television. Heller wrote the pilot, which will be directed and executive-produced by Emmy Award nominee Danny Cannon (the “CSI” series, “Nikita”).
Ben McKenzie, Sean Pertwee, Robin Lord Taylor, Zabryna Guevara, Erin Richards, Donal Logue, Jada Pinkett Smith, David Mazouz and Camren Bicondova are set to star with the first episode expected to debut this fall.
If this turns out to be as good as it looks, I’ll be following a network show on a regular basis, something I haven’t done in a long time. Tim Burton once said that the great thing about Batman is that the characters are all messed up, the villains and Batman, only he used more colorful language. This has so much potential. If Smallville was able to get as much milage as it did out of boring Lex Luthor, I can only imagine where Heller will go with some villains that are psychologically complex. I know they changed the concept a bit from their original plan, and frankly they had to, as there would be no audience if Bruce were not around, but I still hope they go with a police procedural feel.

I’m really excited. This looks like an epic GOTHAM anthology almost a grown up Batman TAS focusing on the supporting cast. I think Bruce will be a touchstone, but only in the sense that it looks like his case is the one that finally cracks the ice on Gotham’s evil.
