Killing Time – June 5, 2014

killing time

“Time ripens all things; no man is born wise.”
~ Cervantes (Don Quixote)

What a week for Star Wars fans.  We’ve been absolutely inundated with new information.  We had a gigantic leak of nearly 70 pictures (probably by JJ Abrams, who is having way more fun than any other human being on Earth).  Two new cast members in Oscar-winner Lupita Nyong’o and Game of Thrones’ Gwendoline Christie (You know 85-year-old Max von Sydow is going to just glare at Nyong’o and mutter about acting for sixty years and not having an Oscar, but-no-that’s cool, be just out of diapers and be handed one.  I was in the Seventh bloody Seal!).  Then we found out that Chronicle and FF remake director Josh Trank would be taking on one of the Star Wars spin-offs!

I think we can take now from Abrams, Trank and Gareth Edwards getting the first three assignments in the new Star Wars film age that Lucasfilm is going for young directors, directors raised on the original trilogy and directors who all have unique visual styles that can add something to a filmverse that is going to expand exponentially over the next few…decades.  I also think, given that Trank’s film will come AFTER Episode VIII, that we’ll soon be hearing an announcement about who is going to follow JJ with the second film.  My personal choice would be Brad Bird followed by Alfonso Cuaron (but he just turned down the new Harry Potter because he didn’t want “to do a lot of F/X” after sinking himself into Gravity).  Episode VIII is obviously a higher-profile film with bigger stakes.  Who do you want to see follow Abrams?  Now I’m going to race through the rest of this before something new is published and my Star Wars wrap-up is obsolete.

Killing Time milestones this week: The site passed 89,000 hits and completed our best month in site history.  We also had our 3,000th comment and 600th Facebook follower!  The Facebook page is kind of becoming its own community monster so stop by and talk to the good folks over at http://www.facebook.com/killingtime 2014.

The most viewed post of the week was unsurprisingly the first Gallery of Photos from Star Wars Episode VII that were leaked this week.
