You have to give it to Ubisoft. They make spectacular trailers for their Assassin’s Creed games. Some of the best trailers for any games I’ve ever seen have come from the adventures of the secret brotherhood of assassins and the latest, announcing Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate, as this year’s entry in the franchise is no exception. It was a little bit Guy Ritchie Sherlock meets an episode of Peaky Blinders (watch it now on Netflix). Steampunk. Victorian. Dickensian. Very English; Very Assassin’s Creed.
The Assassin’s Creed franchise is, aside from anything with LEGO in the title (and don’t think I don’t have LEGO Jurassic World pre-ordered), my favorite in gaming. Even the roughest AC game (looking at you ACIII and your ten hour tutorial), steeps its players in history and places you so firmly in the environment of the particular game that you feel you know the city by the time you were done. I have an extremely disproportionate knowledge of Florentine architecture that really impressed my wife until I’d mention I’d assassinated a guy on that building there and then jumped 200 feet into a pile of hay.
This year, we’ll be learning the streets of Victorian-age London. You’ll be playing as two assassins this year a brother/sister team, and from the trailer it looks like you’ll be running into the famous on your journeys yet again as Charles Dickens and Charles Darwin are both mentioned. Ubisoft’s synopsis of the game is below and it will release for Xbox One, Playstation 4 and PC on October 23, 2015.
London. 1868. The Industrial Revolution. An age of invention and prosperity, built on the backs of working class slaves. As gangster assassin Jacob Frye, you will recruit your gang to fight for justice on behalf of the oppressed working class. Lead the underworld to take back London in a visceral adventure filled with action, intrigue and brutal combat.
