Star Wars Episode VII makes the cover of Rolling Stone this week and some new pictures surface.  The most telling one is what we’ve already gleaned from trailers: Kylo Ren has a serious Vader fixation.  My theory (and I have nothing to back this up) is that Ren is the Skywalker/Solo legacy character, that Luke tried to train him and that he fared no better than Obi-Wan did with Anakin.  This drove Luke into hiding.  Knowledge of Vader’s pyre, unless he shared it with Leia, was limited to Luke so Ren has to have some kind of past with Luke to know where the burned helmet would be.  Total speculation on my part, but fun as we are now only 16 days away!!!

  1. I agree that Ren is a Skywalker, and I think there are two possibilities. One is that Luke trained Ren up to a point and inadvertently created another Vader. Then Ren finished his training himself, joined the First Order, and turned around with his minions to drive Luke into exile.

I don’t think that’s very likely. If Luke is in exile he’s not doing it to cower in fear, he’s doing it to bide his time as he waits for the next new hope to emerge. Well, the next new hope is probably Rey and possibly Finn, and they look to be around the same age as Kylo Ren. For the “failed apprentice” scenario to work, Ren would have to be a lot older, because I don’t think Luke trained him, then went into exile, a mere six months prior the start of TFA. He’s been waiting a long time for Rey to emerge, so she would have to be a lot younger than Ren to make the timeline work. Also, I don’t believe Luke would repeat the mistakes of the past by mucking up the training of his apprentice and contributing to the rise of yet ANOTHER Galactic Empire. If he did, he’s worse than InGen.

I stand by my theory that Luke refused to train Ren at all, thusly driving Ren to seek out his own Force education. After the events of ROTJ, Luke split. The danger of the Force, and of trying to get everyone to use it responsibly, are just too great. He will only come out of hiding when it is clear that the dark side has risen again even without his being there. When there is no way to fight the First Order other than Luke taking on the mantle of Jedi again, Luke will grab his long-lost saber and rejoin the fight. But I’d just like to say that it would be wonderful if everyone’s theories were wrong. I’d much rather be surprised than right.
