Ben Affleck, Batman, Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice

Ben Affleck to Write, Direct and Star in Solo Batman Movie

Batman, Ben Affleck, Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of JusticeI’m actually fine with this.  I did not think any of the performances, aside from Jesse Eisenberg’s worst comic movie villain since Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Mr. Freeze, was the problem in Batman vs. Superman.  The problem was Zach Snyder can’t direct and the script had SIX writers.  I’ll pick David Goyer and blame him since he’s written fantastic things.  I think the same situation is what tanked the 2003 Daredevil movie, not Affleck.  This time, especially, I feel sorry for him because he had to want to choke out Zach Snyder and scream I HAVE WON AN OSCAR FOR DOING YOUR JOB!!!  Affleck is a terrific director, has another Oscar for screenplay, so having him in control of all facets makes me hopeful for THIS installment of the DCCU.  More below from Coming Soon.

With Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice having earned $785.8 million worldwide so far, Warner Bros. Pictures is looking to extend its relationship with their new Batman, Ben Affleck. Having previously been contracted for the Justice League: Part One and Part Two movies, it was confirmed on Tuesday by Warner Bros. chairman and CEO Kevin Tsujihara at CinemaCon that Affleck will direct and star in a stand-alone Batman movie as well.

Last summer, it was revealed that Affleck would co-write the stand-alone Batman movie with comic scribe Geoff Johns with an eye toward directing it, though no further information on the film had been released since.

Production on Justice League: Part One has begun in London. Affleck will be joined by his fellow Justice League members Henry Cavill as Superman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Ray Fisher as Cyborg, and Ezra Miller as The Flash. Amber Heard is set to play Queen Mera in the film as well before moving to the solo Aquaman movie in 2018, with J.K. Simmons set to appear as Commissioner Gordon. The Zack Snyder-directed movie will debut in theaters on November 10, 2017.

  1. I’m not so fine with this. I’m not knocking Affleck as an actor. He was good in BvS. And I’m not knocking him as a director, either. He’s not Chris Nolan, but he’s really talented and I have no doubt he has a lot to offer to WB as they move forward with this beast they’ve unleashed.

My problem is the way Batman was characterized in BvS. I thought he just came off as a murdering thug. And what was the deal with the way he branded his victims? I knew going in that Batman was going to be grizzled and sadistic, but I was expecting him to be grizzled and sadistic like the way he was portrayed in Frank Miller’s masterpiece. Ruthless, charismatic, and smart. Instead, they took the most psychologically interesting superhero of all time and drained him of all interest. Unless they completely rethink the character, and totally ignore what was set up in BvS, I honestly can’t see this working, even with Ben at the helm.

Maybe, though, they WILL completely rethink the character and ignore what was set up in BvS. Stranger things have happened. WB can’t be happy with Snyder right now, but they hired Affleck for a reason.

(Also, I thought the best part of BvS was Jeremy Irons, and I’m actually looking forward to more of his Alfred. But now that I’ve said that, watch him get replaced for some reason.)

    Anyway, here’s hoping.
