Ocean’s 8 Trailer #1 (2018) “Every Con Has Its Pros”

My question about Ocean’s 8 is: is there any other reason for its existence other than a gender swap?  This ensemble has a stellar cast of some of the best actresses alive, and is the best Hollywood can do is to write them a gender flopped version of something that worked really well with guys (this IS related to the Ocean’s franchise, though Matt Damon’s part in the film is now in jeopardy given his involvement in what we’ll call for brevity “The Weinstein Vortex of Ick”)?  Apparently, from the trailer at least, yes, all Hollywood has the brains to do is make an Ocean’s film with actresses and not deviate even a little from that template.  I hope it’s better than the first look, because these women are better than hand me downs.  Ocean’s 8 will open June 8, 2018.

  1. Looks very stylish and agonizingly generic … but I hope it does well, if for nothing else than to piss off the primordial pond scum that have already threatened physical violence toward the actors if this should ever be mentioned on the interwebz ever again.

    1. The backlash against the Ghostbusters reboot was explainable by the fact that the movie would have been terrible even with men. But O8 looks about on par with a male-centric heist film. No leg to stand to stand on for the pond scum.

Still, this movie is just trotting out a bunch of film tropes, and superimposing a bunch of gender-specific tropes (a housewife, fashion designers, the cliched joke about “no wonder you don’t have a husband”) on top of them. I’m waiting for Hollywood movies to start reflecting the fact that women make up slightly more than half the population, and are stronger, both mentally and emotionally, than men.

    2. It’s in a tough spot. Sandwiched between Deadpool 2 and Incredibles 2 and two weeks after Solo: A Star Wars Story, so it’s not guaranteed. Ghostbusters lost money trying this, and if it fails, it certainly isn’t the talent’s fault. It’s the fricking studios who can’t invest money in writing the way they do in explosions to give these women vehicles that aren’t tired franchises.
