John Boyega in Pacific Rim: Uprising

Pacific Rim: Uprising Trailer #2 (2018) “RISE UP!”

Pacific Rim: Uprising only has Guillermo del Toro as producer, so the particular blend of over-the-top wackiness that brought Lovecraftian monsters to bear against what are essentially giant Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em robots in Pacific Rim may be missing in the sequel.  But if you think that’s going to prevent me, as a guy whose last name is Yaeger, from going to see a movie in which giant robots called Jaegers save the day…..you are sadly, sadly mistaken.  It could be the worst movie of the year and still serve as a two hour self-affirmation journey for me.  So when the Kaijus return in March….I shall be there!  RISE JAEGERS RISE!

Pacific Rim Uprising

The globe-spanning conflict between otherworldly monsters of mass destruction and the human-piloted super-machines built to vanquish them was only a prelude to the all-out assault on humanity in Pacific Rim Uprising.

John Boyega (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) stars as the rebellious Jake Pentecost, a once-promising Jaeger pilot whose legendary father gave his life to secure humanity’s victory against the monstrous “Kaiju.” Jake has since abandoned his training only to become caught up in a criminal underworld. But when an even more unstoppable threat is unleashed to tear through our cities and bring the world to its knees, he is given one last chance to live up to his father’s legacy by his estranged sister, Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi)—who is leading a brave new generation of pilots that have grown up in the shadow of war. As they seek justice for the fallen, their only hope is to unite together in a global uprising against the forces of extinction.

Jake is joined by gifted rival pilot Lambert (The Fate of the Furious‘ Scott Eastwood) and 15-year-old Jaeger hacker Amara (newcomer Cailee Spaeny), as the heroes of the PPDC become the only family he has left. Rising up to become the most powerful defense force to ever walk the earth, they will set course for a spectacular all-new adventure on a towering scale.

  1. In the first film Guillermo took the time to make the jaegers look like they were behemoths in a lilliputian setting. Admittedly, just from the trailer, it looks like these one’s are a bit less constrained by gravity, inertia, etc … which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but I did like that touch of reality. (in a completely unreal sort of way) These ones look a bit Transformer-y.
But, it is only a trailer, and we all know that trailers never give away anything of substance from the actual movie. 😀
Nevertheless, I shall be right there in the cinema, enjoying the spectacle of it all. 🙂

  2. The leaping Yeager at :56 looks like Grievous.

This trailer is much, much better than the first one, but I still say that if you take GDT out of a film about giant robots fighting giant monsters, all you are left with is giant robots fighting giant monsters. GDT elevated the material, but this new one looks like it was made by people who didn’t understand that it needed to be elevated. I hope I’m complitenrdd
wrong. I’m such a huge fan of the first one.

BTW, I want to see GDT on that stage in a few weeks, gripping that Oscar.

      1. Your name is attached to the movie, and GDT’s name is there, too.

I shall be there on opening night.
