Tom Hardy in Venom

Venom Trailer #1 (2018) “WE are Venom!”

Sony has released the first full trailer for Venom.  The teaser trailer had a good atmosphere to it, but we didn’t actually get to see Venom.  Well, we’ve seen him now!  There’s a lot about the trailer I like that Spider-Man 3 completely got wrong with the character, there’s also a few things about it that give me pause (not the least of which is that is NOT how I have been saying “symbiote” for 25 years).  I like they establish Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy) as a decent guy.  I like that Venom is its own personality and that together they are a “we” entity.  That’s very true to the comics.  I love the look of the character.  Some of the F/X seem a little off, but in a trailer six months out that’s tough to judge.  It’s recently been reported that Woody Harrelson’s role in the film will be Carnage, but we’ll have to see when Venom hits theaters October 5, 2018.

Tom Hardy In Venom

Tom Hardy stars in the upcoming feature film as Eddie Brock, the host for Venom. Joining him are Michelle Williams (The Greatest Showman), Riz Ahmed (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story), Jenny Slate (Zootopia) and Woody Harrelson (the Hunger Games franchise, True Detective).

Venom will hail from Sony’s Marvel Universe of characters and will not be a spinoff of the current Marvel Cinematic Universe, wherein Sony allows Spider-Man to be played by Tom Holland. Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach are producing along with Amy Pascal, with Palak Patel and Eric Fineman overseeing for Columbia Pictures.

Directed by Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland, Gangster Squad) and written by Scott Rosenberg (Pain & Gain, Jumanji) & Jeff Pinkner (The Amazing Spider-Man 2), the Venom film is set for an October 5, 2018 release date.

    1. I am, as well, if for no other reason than if Sony has a successful Venom, they may be more inclined not to try to yank bank Spider-Man from the MCU.

  1. I won’t lie. This looks much better than I was expecting. But it comes across as a little thin, even in this trailer, and we all know why, it’s because it was always going to be half a movie, even in a best case scenario.

If Woody Harrelson is playing Carnage, there is a LOT they’re not even hinting at. My guess is, he isn’t. This trailer makes this look like a tame, generic supernatural horror flick where a guy gets possessed by an entity, and becomes Venom at the very end.

Hope I’m wrong. Though honestly I don’t know whether to root for or against this movie.

      1. If they really play up the horror angle, if all that talk of looking to Cronenberg was actually sincere, this has the potential to be a game changer. It probably won’t be, don’t get me wrong, but it could be. That close up is one of the most perfect recreations of a comic book character I have ever seen. I assume the CGI is slightly unfinished (the eyes in particular look very plastic) but it’s possible the wrongness of a Venom movie without Spider-Man will be offset by Sony’s willingness to go more nightmarish than the MCU. This had better be an R movie, especially if they want to portray Carnage in all his glory.
