Aquaman Trailer #1 (2018) *Home Is Calling*

Aquaman has been one of my favorite DCEU incarnations, regardless of the quality of the films he’s thus far appeared in.  December brings us DCEU Issue #6 and Aquaman’s solo film debut.  James Wan will direct Jason Mamoa, Amber Heard, Willem Dafoe, Nicole Kidman, Patrick Wilson, Randall Park and others in an underseas epic.  The first trailer for Aquaman was the finale of WB’s San Diego Comic-Con film panel (which means I may now go eat a sandwich and stop hitting “refresh”).  Of the two DCEU trailers WB brought to Comic-Con…Shazam looked better than I had hoped and Aquaman…was rough.  Visually stunning in parts, but there is some wince-inducing stuff in this.  It is the first look, but it’s also a film that’s basically done.  We shall see.  Aquaman swims into theaters on December 21, 2018.

From CBR’s notes on the panel:

Aquaman closed out the panel with an epic entrance by Jason Mamoa. The cast and director James Wan took the stage.

“One of the big things I wanted to do was create a superhero world we’d never seen before,” Wan said, “This might in some ways play more like a sci-fi/fantasy film than a traditional superhero movie which I think you’ll see in the trailer.”

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II confessed that despite getting the role of Black Manta, he didn’t know how to swim. “I secretly went down to the hotel pool when we were filming with a kick board and taught myself how to swim in the mornings and evenings,” he laughed, “but then in the end I ended up not really having to do that much swimming.

Shazam Trailer #1 (2019) *Say the Magic Word*

The DCEU will have one film this year (Aquaman) and three next year (Shazam, Joker, Wonder Woman 1984).  After the failure of Justice League last year, WB has put a lot of effort into getting their uneven film universe back on track.  Captain Marvel and Aquaman are an unlikely one-two punch back to being on track, but they’re also characters that have no film history and little pop culture footprint.  The first look at Shazam is really promising and seems to validate the casting of Zachary Levi (Chuck) in the role.  Full synopsis from Coming Soon below.  Shazam will hit theaters in April 2019.

We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson’s (Angel) case, by shouting out one word—SHAZAM!—this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam (Levi), courtesy of an ancient wizard. Still a kid at heart—inside a ripped, godlike body—Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them! Can he fly? Does he have X-ray vision? Can he shoot lightning out of his hands? Can he skip his social studies test? Shazam sets out to test the limits of his abilities with the joyful recklessness of a child. But he’ll need to master these powers quickly in order to fight the deadly forces of evil controlled by Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Strong).

The cast includes Asher Angel (Andi Mack) as Billy Batson, Djimon Hounsou (Guardians of the Galaxy) as The Wizard, and Mark Strong (Kingsman) in the role of Super-Villain Dr. Thaddeus Sivana. The film also stars Jack Dylan Grazer (IT) as Billy’s best friend and ultimate superhero enthusiast, Freddy, part of the foster family that includes Mary, played by Grace Fulton (Annabelle: Creation); Darla, played by Faithe Herman (This is Us); Eugene, played by Ian Chen (Fresh Off the Boat); and Pedro, played by Jovan Armand (Hawaii Five-0). Cooper Andrews (The Walking Dead) and Marta Milans (Killer Women) play foster parents Victor and Rosa Vasquez.

Shazam opens April 5, 2019.

The Walking Dead Season 9 Trailer #1 (2018 – AMC) “Rick’s Last Ride Begins”

The Walking Dead is headed for some serious changes over the next year.  Season nine of the zombie survival drama will see a time jump from the season eight finale, and this season will be the last for Andrew Lincoln (Rick Grimes).  TWD has had some trouble staying as gripping as it used to be, and a lot of fans will look hard at how the show manages this transition before deciding whether or not to keep the show in their rotation.  TWD Season 9 will premiere on AMC on October 7, 2018.  More below from Comic Book Resources.

walking-dead-season9There are three months to go before The Walking Dead returns to AMC for its ninth season, but that’s not too early for the show’s cast and crew to converge at Comic-Con International in San Diego‘s Hall H for a panel highlighting what to expect when the show returns in October of this year. Alongside executive producers Angela Kang, Scott M. Gimple, Robert Kirkman, Gale Anne Hurd, David Alpert and Greg Nicotero, stars Andrew Lincoln, Norman Reedus, Lauren Cohan, Danai Gurira, Melissa McBride and Jeffrey Dean Morgan were on hand to offer fans a few teases about Season 9. CBR is there live, so keep hitting refresh for the latest details.

The Season 9 premiere will be Sunday October 7th. The panel opened with the first look at Season 9’s trailer:

It opens with Rick visiting Negan in a makeshift dungeon — spoiler alert, they still hate each other. The time jump is confirmed by the look we get of Maggie and Glenn’s baby who’s probably about a year old. The communities are all looking far more sophisticated, developed and idyllic. We get shots of Rick and Michonne riding horses and fighting walkers and in general being #couplegoals. Rick has fully welcomed the Sanctuary into the fold and actively helps them rebuild. A team winds up exploring D.C. for an unknown reason, and one of the new communities (Toledo) appears to cause serious problems and be the new nemesis. Jadis has fully integrated into some society and looks pretty happy. There is underlying strife between Rick, Maggie and Darryl that looks very serious — not surprising considering Maggie’s promise to kill Negan when she gets the first chance.  Eugene and a partially blind Gabriel appear, as well as Carol who’s questioning her position in peacetime.

And finally, after the final title card rolled, we got a shot of two people sliding down a riverbank and covering themselves with mud to hide from a train of walkers. As the walkers pass, one of them whispers “Where… are… they?” So, you know, take that as you will.

Avengers: Infinity War Blu Ray Release Date and Special Features

Josh Brolin in Avengers: Infinity War
Arriving just in time to help everyone forget how unfortunate Ant-Man and the Wasp was (yeah…not sure if I’m going to write a review…I may have reached saturation point with reviewing movies that bitterly disappoint me…it WAS that bad, yes) here comes Marvel’s second of two 2018 triumphs: Infinity War on 4K and Blu Ray.  Earlier this month, it was rumored that we’d be getting 30 extra minutes of Thanos on the blu ray.  The actual blu ray falls short of that by 26 minutes.  There are a number of featurettes, deleted scenes, and a 2.5 hour commentary from the Russo Brothers to satisfy fans.  I imagine, after next year’s Avengers 4, that we’ll get some kind of double-dip release with extras beyond this for completionists, but since Marvel has never really excelled at doing more than the minimum for home video I wouldn’t wait.  Details below from Disney’s press release.  You can have Thanos at home in three weeks.  SNAP!

Marvel Studios and Disney Home Entertainment have officially announced the details for the digital, Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K release of Avengers: Infinity War. The cinematic event ten-years in the making comes home digitally on July 31 and blu-ray on August 14 with over two hours of bonus.  Continue reading Avengers: Infinity War Blu Ray Release Date and Special Features

Deadpool 2 Blu Ray Release Date and Special Features

I was a little mixed on Deadpool 2 when it came out in May.  If I had known the entire summer after it was about to do a group dive down the toilet I really would have cherished the experience more.  A day after Fox announced that it would screen an uncut version of the film at San Diego Comic-Con, it announced the digital and home video release date for the film along with a slew of special features.  The film will release digitally on August 7, 2018, and on 4K and Blu Ray August 21, 2018.  More details below from Coming Soon.
