Avengers: Infinity War Blu Ray Release Date and Special Features

Josh Brolin in Avengers: Infinity War
Arriving just in time to help everyone forget how unfortunate Ant-Man and the Wasp was (yeah…not sure if I’m going to write a review…I may have reached saturation point with reviewing movies that bitterly disappoint me…it WAS that bad, yes) here comes Marvel’s second of two 2018 triumphs: Infinity War on 4K and Blu Ray.  Earlier this month, it was rumored that we’d be getting 30 extra minutes of Thanos on the blu ray.  The actual blu ray falls short of that by 26 minutes.  There are a number of featurettes, deleted scenes, and a 2.5 hour commentary from the Russo Brothers to satisfy fans.  I imagine, after next year’s Avengers 4, that we’ll get some kind of double-dip release with extras beyond this for completionists, but since Marvel has never really excelled at doing more than the minimum for home video I wouldn’t wait.  Details below from Disney’s press release.  You can have Thanos at home in three weeks.  SNAP!

Marvel Studios and Disney Home Entertainment have officially announced the details for the digital, Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K release of Avengers: Infinity War. The cinematic event ten-years in the making comes home digitally on July 31 and blu-ray on August 14 with over two hours of bonus.  Continue reading Avengers: Infinity War Blu Ray Release Date and Special Features

Deadpool 2 Blu Ray Release Date and Special Features

I was a little mixed on Deadpool 2 when it came out in May.  If I had known the entire summer after it was about to do a group dive down the toilet I really would have cherished the experience more.  A day after Fox announced that it would screen an uncut version of the film at San Diego Comic-Con, it announced the digital and home video release date for the film along with a slew of special features.  The film will release digitally on August 7, 2018, and on 4K and Blu Ray August 21, 2018.  More details below from Coming Soon. The First Purge
Each Thursday we look at what is going to be coming out in theaters this weekend, show you the trailers for the big releases, predict the box office winner and just generally give you enough of a carrot to pull you through the rest of the work week.  This week welcomes the MCU back to theaters for the final time in 2018.

My Favorite Scene: Black Panther (2018) “Black Panther vs. Killmonger”

A very valid criticism of the MCU before Phase Three was that it has spent its time on its heroes to the detriment of its villains.  It’s a testament to how well-cast and developed the heroes have been because a lot of Marvel’s villains have been forgettable at best.  Beginning with Zemo in Captain America: Civil War, you began to see three-dimensional baddies, building to Michael B. Jordan’s Killmonger in Black Panther.  The best villains are convinced they’re right in what they’re doing and are either charismatic enough to convince the audience that they are justified in their actions or have legitimate points that they’ve taken to unacceptable extremes.  Killmonger forces T’Challa out of his comfort zone and makes him face uncomfortable truths about the past of his family and the policies of his country.  He’s lethal, driven, but also completely understandable and sympathetic.

Halfway through 2018, Black Panther is probably still the best film of the year-to-date.  2018 has been jammed full of unwarranted sequels and anemic remakes.  This is, in all likelihood, the worst year for film in my lifetime.  Without the MCU, I can’t even imagine how sick I’d be of the theater.  Issue #20 releases this weekend with Ant-Man and the Wasp, and it can’t arrive soon enough.  Marvel’s success this year has been astounding.  The last two MCU films (Black Panther & Avengers: Infinity War) are the #3 and #4 highest grossing films of all-time in the US.  That’s a staggering achievement and testimony to how trusted the quality of the MCU has become in a time where even the most reliable franchises have started to sputter out.
