Movie Review: Independence Day – Resurgence (2016) *I Was Rooting for the Aliens*

Jeff Goldblum, Brent Spiner, Independence Day: Resurgence

Though the world of Independence Day has been waiting 20 years for the aliens to return; moviegoers have not.  Things are very, very different from the cinematic world of 1996.  Returning to this universe would have required doing what the original did: showing us F/X we simply had not seen before on that scale, while charming us with the human-level performances.  Did Independence Day: Resurgence achieve that?  Let’s just say you have no idea how much charisma Will Smith has until he goes from being the breakout star of your film to a portrait on the White House wall. Trailer Time: Free State of Jones Trailer #2 (2016) *McConaughey Leads a Rebellion in a Rebellion*

STX Entertainment has just brought online a new Free State of Jones movie trailer and, in the player below, you can take a look at the upcoming Civil War action drama, starring Matthew McConaughey (Interstellar, Dallas Buyers Club). There are also several new Free State of Jones movie stills, all of which can be found in the gallery viewer at the bottom of this page.

Written and directed by four-time Oscar nominee Gary Ross (The Hunger Games, Seabiscuit, Pleasantville), the Free State of Jones movie offers an epic action-drama set during the Civil War, and tells the story of defiant Southern farmer, Newt Knight, and his extraordinary armed rebellion against the Confederacy. Banding together with other small farmers and local slaves, Knight launched an uprising that led Jones County, Mississippi to secede from the Confederacy, creating a Free State of Jones. Knight continued his struggle into Reconstruction, distinguishing him as a compelling, if controversial, figure of defiance long beyond the War.

The film co-stars Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Beyond the Lights), Keri Russell (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes) and Mahershala Ali (The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1, “House of Cards”). The film is being produced by Scott Stuber (Ted, Safe House) through his Blue Grass Films shingle, with Jon Kilik (Foxcatcher, The Hunger Games) producing through his Jon Kilik Productions, and Ross producing through his Larger Than Life Productions.

STX Entertainment will release the movie nationwide on June 24.

Trailer Time: Independence Day – Resurgence Trailer #3 (2016) *Well That Trailer Was Even Bigger….Than The Last TWO!*

The first two trailers weren’t big enough.  Today a FIVE MINUTE trailer for Independence Day: Resurgence has been unveiled.  The first film hasn’t aged terribly well, but I have to say, this will at least LOOK spectacular.  I do love that Roland Emmerich is so aware of his penchant for squashing landmarks that he worked it into the script,  ID42 will open on June 24, 2016. Plot synopsis below.

We always knew they were coming back. After INDEPENDENCE DAY catastrophe on an unimaginable scale. Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare us for the aliens’ advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction.

Trailer Time: Independence Day – Resurgence Trailer #2 (2016) *Well That Trailer Was Even Bigger….Than The First One*

This has been a huge week for summer blockbuster trailers, and Independence Day: Resurgence gets into the act with its second trailer.  Will Roland Emmerich leave any monument on Earth standing?  The man lives to destroy iconic architecture.  This trailer forms more of a link between the first and second films (btw how is Brent Spiner’s character still alive?) and Will Smith even gets a cameo….as a dead man in a photo, but he made the trailer!  ID42 will open on June 24, 2016. Plot synopsis below.

Trailer Time: The Nice Guys (2016) Trailer #2 *Ryan Gosling, Russell Crowe & Shane Black*

Russell Crowe has gone from being one of the biggest stars of the world to someone who barely deserves top billing over Ryan Gosling in this film.  Think about it: when was the last time Crowe had a huge hit?  I think he was the best thing about Man of Steel, but that had a mixed reception and he had a supporting role.  You have to go all the way back to 2007’s 3:10 to Yuma to find a Crowe starring vehicle that was a success (and that a modest one; if you discount that it’s back to 2005’s Cinderella Man).  He needs a hit.  I’m not sure if The Nice Guys is it, but it the trailers have been funny and have very much the same kind of vibe as Kiss Kiss Bang Bang: the Shane Black film that begin Robert Downey Jr.’s career resurrection and one of the most underrated films of the last 25 years.  I’m not sure if this is THAT.  After all, the last time Shane Black crossed my radar he directed the worst film in the MCU in Iron Man 3, but I hope this delivers.  The Nice Guys hits theaters on May 20, 2016.
