Golden globes

Amy Poehler and Tina Fey again hosted the pre-Oscars or as the Hollywood Foreign Press insists on calling them: The Golden Globes.  If you take the trends at the Golden Globes as your Oscar tarot cards, then your best picture race is really 12 Years as a Slave vs. American Hustle.  Acting awards have been all over the map and they remain a complete wildcard going into Oscar time.  Alfonso Cuaron is going to win Director no matter what anyone else does.  Also, “Let it Go” did not win best song and there’s a divot on my wall to prove it.  Granted I have bronchitis so it’s a small divot and not where I aimed, but a divot nontheless.

On the TV side the love was for House of Cards and Breaking Bad for drama, but the most notable outcome was that this ceremony may have saved Brooklyn Ninety-Nine, the season’s best new comedy, from cancellation by trigger-happy FOX.  It won best comedy and Andy Samberg won for best actor in a comedy and that prestige may just buy it a second season.  The full list of nominees and winners is below: Continue reading Full List of Winners from the 71st Golden Globes

POLL RESULTS: What is the Best New Show of the 2013-2014 TV Season?

In a stunner, Agents of SHIELD is taken down!  Maybe it’s the slow start to this season, but after widespread voting, The Blacklist is the official Best New Show of 2013-2014.  It was close between the two dramas, but Blacklist edged SHIELD 31.58% to 26.32%.  FOX’s Sleepy Hollow and Brooklyn Ninety-Nine were a distant third and fourth.  I have to admit, I’m loving The Blacklist.  I’m loving a James Spader show.  What color is the sky in this strange world…

2013 – 2014 New TV Shows Canceled and Pick-Ups as of 10/22/13

abc, cbs, nbc, fox, cw

Ok boob tube fans, we’re a month into the TV season and most shows have premiered.  Some have already fallen by the wayside; some have already been assured a full season.  Here’s your complete scorecard as of today (no shooting the messenger):

* FOX has (wisely) picked up Andy Samberg’s police comedy Brooklyn Ninety-Nine for a full season order.

* ABC has picked up Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. for a full season, but the only surprise there was that it did not already have one.  It may as well renew it for three or four more seasons.

* NBC canceled Welcome to the Family after three episodes.

* On the theory that I may have an audience of women who watch this, America’s Next Top Model renewed for “Cycle” 21…whatever that means.  No, I don’t want to know!

* NBC canceled Ironside after three episodes.  Somewhere Raymond Burr is laughing his dead butt off….why did that even pop into my head….

* CBS has given Mom, The Millers, and Robin Williams’ The Crazy Ones full-season orders.

* CBS canceled We are Men after two episodes at least allowing it to fulfill the plurality implicit in its title.

* Not a new show, but FOX already renewed The Simpsons for its 26th season.

* NBC (sagely and wisely) has ordered a full season of James Spader’s The Blacklist.

* ABC canceled Lucky 7 before I figured out what it was.

* HBO renewed Boardwalk Empire for season 5.

* F/X renewed Wilfred for season 4.

* And in a move…albeit a tiny move…away from the abyss of insanity that has become people watching TV, A&E canceled Hoarders.  So stop nominating your in-laws.

POLL: What is Your Favorite Show of the New Season So Far?

abc, cbs, nbc, fox, cw

Well, the fall TV season is three weeks in and, while there are a few shows still to premiere, most have at least two or three episodes under their belt?  Which has stood out to you as the best?  Obviously, I’m watching SHIELD (tomorrow the review, tomorrow, I swear), but I also picked up Brooklyn Ninety-Nine and The Blacklist.  Vote for your favorite new show and we’ll have the results a bit after Halloween!
