Movie Review: War for the Planet of the Apes (2017) *Apes, Indeed, STRONG!!!*

War for the Planet of the Apes
Rise of the Planet of the Apes was a surprisingly good movie.  Dawn of the Planet of the Apes was an outstanding movie.  War for the Planet of the Apes completes the prequel trilogy to the Planet of the Apes franchise with a science fiction classic.  Combining practical F/X and state-of-the-art motion capture performances, the human and ape cast combine to tell a powerful narrative that binds all three films into a powerful tale about the fall of humanity and the rise of a new civilization. My Favorite Scene: Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014) “Monkey See; Monkey Shoot”

Every hero needs a villain.  The strength of the hero is shown in the vileness of the villain he has to overcome.  One of the reasons Dawn of the Planet of the Apes was twice as good as Rise of Planet of the Apes was that Caesar had his very own Brutus in Toby Kebbell’s Koba. Trailer Time: War for the Planet of the Apes Trailer #3 (2017) *For Freedom, For Family, For the Planet!*

Each trailer for War for the Planet of the Apes has looked more and more impressive, and the final trailer before the film hits in mid-July doesn’t disappoint.  What Matt Reeves and Andy Serkis have achieved with these films, both in resurrecting a very, very dead franchise and in pushing the boundaries of the marriage of technology and acting, can’t be overstated.  Gollum will always be the character and performance that created mo-cap acting, but Serkis has spent even more time on Caesar.  In Caesar he’s created such a nuanced, fully-realized creation that I think the last boundaries of what can be imagined and what can be successfully transitioned to the screen are gone.  If you can imagine it, there’s a way to make it happen and make it happen brilliantly.  For that, Serkis deserves the kind of special achievement Oscar Toy Story got when it was released and changed animation forever.  Eventually, there needs to be a fifth acting category for voiceover/motion capture performance, but that exists because of Andy Serkis.  He’s quite literally changed motion pictures forever, and very few actors can have been said to ever achieved that.

In War for the Planet of the Apes, the third chapter of the critically acclaimed blockbuster franchise, Caesar and his apes are forced into a deadly conflict with an army of humans led by a ruthless Colonel. After the apes suffer unimaginable losses, Caesar wrestles with his darker instincts and begins his own mythic quest to avenge his kind. As the journey finally brings them face to face, Caesar and the Colonel are pitted against each other in an epic battle that will determine the fate of both their species and the future of the planet.

Trailer Time: War for the Planet of the Apes Trailer #2 (2017) *APES…TOGETHER…STRONG!!!*

July looks like the best month of the summer, with an amazing release each week.  If it ends up being like this month, which was similarly crowded, the releases in the first half are going to be the ones walking tall at the box office (though August looks pretty barren compared to April).  Each entry in Matt Reeves’ Apes revival has been better, and War for the Planet of the Apes looks like the culmination of his revival of the franchise and Andy Serkis’ astounding achievement in bringing Caesar to life.  I’m a Chris Nolan disciple so Dunkirk is my #1 July film….but I think I’m looking forward to this even more than Spider-Man.

Trailer Time: War for the Planet of the Apes Trailer #1 (2017) *Caesar’s Coming, Humans!*

It is raining Summer 2017 movie trailers this week.  In case you thought there wasn’t enough awesome coming in the spring, we’ve got a lot more to look forward to including the third movie in the revived Apes series.  Dawn of the Planet of the Apes was so much better than Rise of the Planet of the Apes it was like an exponential explosion, and I still maintain that Andy Serkis deserved an Oscar nomination.  He’s invented a completely new way of acting for modern F/X that has allowed them to serve the story in a whole new way.  Dawn left us in a very dire place and I’ve been waiting to see Caesar and company again.  Read the plot synopsis and get ready to actually have movies in the summer be good outside of May for the first time in years.
