Movie Review: Maze Runner: The Death Cure (2018) “Every Maze Has An End”

Dylan O'Brien in Maze Runner: The Death Cure
The Maze Runner trilogy has been an enjoyable ride from its opening film (which is outstanding) through The Scorch Trials (which I think served as a good bridge film) now to its conclusion in The Death Cure.  Neither final film was able to deliver as good a story as the opening entry, and since this is the rare occasion where I waited to read the books until after the series was finished, I can’t tell you how faithful the adaptation is to James Dashner’s novels, but I think they stand as a good, sometimes great, action adventure trilogy.  If The Death Cure isn’t quite as perfect as end as I might have hoped, it is definitely an end, delivering some great sequences, surprises, and overcoming a bloated run time. Each Thursday we look at what is going to be coming out in theaters this weekend, show you the trailers for the big releases, predict the box office winner and just generally give you enough of a carrot to pull you through the rest of the work week.  Nobody likes to compete with the Super Bowl, so there is only one wide release hitting theaters this weekend. Maze Runner: The Death Cure Trailer #2 (2018) “Every Maze Has An End”

The Maze Runner is, in my opinion, the best YA adaptation to come out of the glut of films spawned by the success of The Hunger Games.  The sequel, The Scorch Trials, got less critical praise, but I really liked it too and thought it set things up well for the finale.  Unfortunately that finale got delayed a year when an on-the-set accident severely injured series star Dylan O’Brien, but now we’re set for the final act.  This is more of a teaser than a first trailer, but FOX can call it what it wants.  Maze Runner: The Death Cure opens has been pushed back a few weeks from its original January opening and now will hit theaters February 9, 2018.

In the epic finale to the Maze Runner saga, Thomas leads his group of escaped Gladers on their final and most dangerous mission yet. To save their friends, they must break into the legendary Last City, a WCKD-controlled labyrinth that may turn out to be the deadliest maze of all. Anyone who makes it out alive will get answers to the questions the Gladers have been asking since they first arrived in the maze.

Maze Runner: The Death Cure was directed by franchise helmer Wes Ball and also features Kaya Scodelario, Ki Hong, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Giancarlo Esposito, Aidan Gillen, Barry Pepper, and even Will Poulter will be back for this final chapter of the trilogy.
