SDCC 2018: 2018-2019 DC TV Trailers – Arrow, Flash, and More!

Stephen Amell in Arrow

DC has premiered the trailers for its six live-action fall shows.  Arrow, Black Lightning, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, The Flash, and Supergirl return to The CW this fall.  DC’s future plans for TV are centered around their DCU Streaming Service.  The new service was unveiled at Comic-Con and the trailer for the service’s first show, Titans, was unveiled.  DC plans to add live-action Swamp Thing, Doom Patrol, and Stargirl shows next year as well as animated series featuring Young Justice and Harley Quinn.  The only DC show that wasn’t trailer-ready for Comic-Con was SyFy’s Krypton.  The Superman prequel show announced it would be returning in early 2019 and that season two’s big bad would be intergalactic bounty hunter Lobo.

Justice League Trailer #5 (2017) “Justice is Served”

The five Justice League trailers over the last 18 months have been wildly divergent in tone, reflecting the turmoil in making the film, but the last two have been really solid.  This is a bit of a “greatest hits” of the trailers we’ve seen with new footage thrown in to whet out appetites.  I’m really looking forward to this, and that is something I was not feeling at all a few months ago.  I have a lot of questions about the future of the DCEU (not the least of which is we are going to get more Justice League films that lead to Darkseid, right?), but I think WB knows they have to nail this film to keep the momentum going from Wonder Woman (because there isn’t another DCEU film until Aquaman a year later, so the impression from this is going to last). Justice League will open November 10, 2017.  For a full plot summary, read below. Justice League Trailer #4 (2017) “All In!!!”

There are a few new bits, but this is essentially a streamlined version of the preview fans got last week at SDCC.  This looks really good.  I mean…really good.  I’ve gone from dreading this to being there opening night. Justice League will open November 10, 2017.  For a full plot summary, read below. Justice League Trailer #3 (2017) *Now THIS is More Like It!!1*

For the second year in a row, the WB panel featured a look at Justice League.  Things, however, are very different than they were a year ago with massive reshoots, the director change to Joss Whedon following Zack Snyder’s family tragedy, and the unexpectly wild success of Wonder Woman.  This is BY FAR the best look at the film so far, the most cohesive trailer, and not only is it noticeably more Wonder Woman-intensive, it carries the same tone.  It also gives us the first look at the film’s villain: Steppenwolf (NO NOT THE BAND), who will inevitably lead us to Darkseid.  I feel a lot more optimistic about this after this year’s look than last year’s.  Justice League will open November 10, 2017.  For a full plot summary, read below. Trailer Time: Justice League Trailer #2 *Will it Come Together?*

The first trailer for Justice League released way back last summer at Comic Con was, I thought, a positive step forward.  It had some funny moments, introduced the team, everyone looked good, and even as someone just coming off Batman vs. Superman letdown, I was liking it.  Eight months later, the second trailer….doesn’t really do much more.  Most of it is spent re-reintroducing the team, and it doesn’t clearly outline the threat or much of the plot.  It’s a lot of super-fast “moments” without context (unless you’re hopelessly geeky like me and I know that oh hey there’s Mera or that’s Barry talking to his imprisoned father).

Justice League, Batman, Ben Affleck, JK Simmons

It’s not enough to say the film is in trouble; it’s just not that impressively assembled a trailer.  NO DC HATE: I am not saying I dislike anything I’m seeing; I’m saying it was put together poorly.  Caveat for Batman/Aquaman who really just need a movie for themselves, and the four seconds I got of JK Simmons as Commissioner Gordon.  My love for Jason Mamoa’s Aquaman is reaching “I need a t-shirt” levels.  Plot synopsis below.  Justice League Part 1 is coming in November.

Fueled by his restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman’s selfless act, Bruce Wayne enlists the help of his newfound ally, Diana Prince, to face an even greater enemy. Together, Batman and Wonder Woman work quickly to find and recruit a team of metahumans to stand against this newly awakened threat. But despite the formation of this unprecedented league of heroes—Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and The Flash—it may already be too late to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions.

Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill and Gal Gadot will be reprising their roles as the DC Trinity, Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman in Warner Bros.‘ Justice League, and joining them are Jason Mamoa as Aquaman, Ray Fisher as Cyborg, and Ezra Miller as The Flash. Amber Heard is set to play Queen Mera in the film as well before moving to the solo Aquaman movie in 2018, with Willem Dafoe appearing in a mystery role, and J.K. Simmons playing Commissioner Gordon.

Directed by Zack Snyder (Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice), Justice League will debut in theaters on November 10, 2017.
