Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 has been, by far, the biggest success story of the MCU thus far. It raised at least six characters from the status of “only known by those of the Chosen Order of Geekhood” to household names. In 2013, I could shout “I AM GROOT” and be taken into protective psychiatric custody. Now, people just think I’m childish (which, truth be told, is the reaction I tend to get anyway). With Awesome Mix-Tape 2 as its background music, the Guardians reassemble in the first full trailer for their second adventures. Aaaand, it’s awesome. People are going to go nuts for this, especially Baby Groot, but, the character that’s surprised me the most is Dave Bautista’s Drax: he’s so good. Watch. Enjoy. Repeat. The Guardians of the Galaxy will return on May 5, 2017.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will be the next film in the MCU after this November’s Doctor Strange. That’s movie #14 if you’re scoring at home. I love this teaser. Doesn’t show too much, teases us with imagery and the characters we fell in love with in 2014’s first installment, and while I’m surprised it wasn’t attached to Doctor Strange, I’m always glad to see new Marvel. The Guardians of the Galaxy will return on May 5, 2017.
This was never even close. With Cap 3 turning into Captain America: Civil War (or as we’ve taken to calling it – Avengers 2.5), people have their eyes on the next huge event in the MCU. What I did find interesting is that every film got multiple votes. This is a phase that seems to have something for everyone and a lot to look forward to over the next four years. The runners-up are both new franchises introducing characters not exactly A-list on the public consciousness with Black Panther and Dr. Strange, which bodes well for the future of the whole enterprise. Thanks for everyone who voted, and we’ll have another poll up next week!
I know that I’ve talked a little about how a literal tsunami of comic book films is coming our way. Soon it isn’t going to be two a year. Next year and 2017 it’s seven. Now, some of those are going to bomb magnificently, but think of any other movie genre (because that’s what comic book movies are now) and we have about 50 action movies a year, so this is really the genre going full-tilt. As long as there are outstanding films in this mix, they won’t all have to be good and we get to reap the rewards.
Just a quick reminder to vote on which of these films is your most anticipated from Marvel’s upcoming third phase of its cinematic universe. Ant-Man will kick things off in just two months, so look through your choices and VOTE VOTE VOTE! The KT Phase 3 film of choice will be announced early next week so get to clickin’!With Avengers: Age of Ultron bringing to a close MCU Phase 2, we now turn our sights to Phase 3, which will begin in just a few short months with Ant-Man. Phase 3 is going to be the darkness before the dawn. We’re going to lose old friends, but we’re going to gain a heck of a lot of new ones including Spider-Man making his MCU debut in Cap 3. The final film in Phase 3 will NOT be Avengers: Infinity War Part II, but The Inhumans, which leads one to wonder what the jumping off point will be for Phase 4. Given their close ties to the Fantastic Four, perhaps they’re hoping they can wheedle them back from FOX by then and give us a post-credits Inhumans tease of Galactus. That ….would be epic.
