For fans of Marvel’s Cosmic Universe, Guardians of the Galaxy was an Easter Egg basket of comicky in-jokes and references. Because Mr. Sunday was already good enough to compile them all into a video, enjoy the clever hidden gems. Oh, and spoiler warning for those of you yet to GO SEE THE MOVIE!!!
Man, James Gunn is a hard-working son of a gun. While we were gorging ourselves on Guardians of the Galaxy 1 this weekend to the tune of $94 million (WOW), Gunn was hard at work on Guardians 2. Gunn has sent out a letter to all the fans of the film, thanking them for turning out and teasing Guardians 2, which is scheduled for July 28, 2017. UPDATE: Marvel has just announced a July 28, 2017 release date for Guardians 2.
If you haven’t been watching Rotten Tomatoes, the early reviews of Guardians of the Galaxy have it at 100%, which should put to rest any remaining fears after the 17 minute preview released earlier this month (click here to read my review of that). Now we can fill in one of those mystery Marvel release dates, because Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is already in the works with James Gunn returning both to write and direct. The news came from the co-writer of the first movie, Nicole Perlman.
“They started to figure it out pretty quick when they started getting the reactions from the audience; it was a very positive reaction. Of course they would want to make a sequel as long as it does well and people are excited about it, they’ll wanna do a sequel. So, it’s going to happen… James will be directing Guardians 2, so he would also be writing Guardians 2.”
One more week, people. We just have to wait one more week. Guardians 1 opens on August 1, 2014.
We knew the Mad Titan was going to show up in Guardians to some extent, enough that someone would have to voice him (the character himself being CGI). Latino Review, one of the most reliable rumor mills out there, is reporting Josh Brolin will be the voice behind Thanos. With only hours left in 2013, Marvel has dropped a huge New Year’s Eve gift for fans: the first official photo from August 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy. We also are given a much more detailed look at what the plot for the film will be. I cannot even begin to explain how much glee it fills me with to see Rocket and Groot. If I have one complaint, it’s that Groot is on the small side, but he can change his size so that’s not really that big a deal. People got a little taste of the Marvel cosmic universe in Thor 2, but Guardians is going to give them a whopping dose of just how much exists outside the confines of Earth (spoiler: it’s a lot).
