The Meg Trailer #1 (2018) “Pleased to Eat You”

Jason Statham has transported and been fast and furious….but has he ever taken on a prehistoric shark?  Hmm?  Well, then clearly The Meg is a movie that was begging to be made, and released in the dead of August (where all Oscar caliber films go).  I’m hoping this will be a companion piece to one of my favorite recent unintentional comedies 47 Meters Down, but Statham versus a huge shark seems a fairer fight than Mandy Moore versus any sharks whatsoever.  The Meg will open August 10, 2018, and Coming Soon has more detailed rundown of the film below. Movie Review: The Fate of the Furious (2017) “CARMAGEDDON!!!”

Dwayne Johnson, Vin Diesel, The Fate of the Furious
I have no idea how in its eighth installment The Fast and the Furious franchise has reached the box office clout of Star Wars.  While it’s nowhere near as possible as THE SAGA in the US; globally, it seems there is a worldwide love of fast cars, pretty people, explosions, and increasingly humongous set pieces.  The Fate of the Furious opened with the largest international opening in history, passing even Star Wars Episode VII to set the new record.  The opening is bigger than Furious 7, but is F8 an improvement on the first movie in the series to be a legitimately great action movie?  No.  In no way is it a descent of epic proportions, but it feels a lot like the fifth and sixth installments: islands of cool moments, enjoyable enough, but bloated beyond justification and beginning to get mired down in its own mythology. My Favorite Scene: Furious 7 (2015) “Abu Dhabi Auto Acrobatics”

I came late to the Fast franchise….well, late and early.  I have related the tale before that, following the premiere of the first film in the series, I sat in my 1994 Saturn in a theater parking lot full of sensible family sedans borrowed from parents and watched said sedans go nuts.  Peeling around corners, fishtailing wildly while their owners tried to locate the NOS button, it took a solid 30 minutes for the automobile carnage to subside to the point where I could putter home.  I skipped the next five. Trailer Time: The Fate of the Furious Trailer #2 *THE CARS ARE FLYING!!!*

The thing about the Fast movies is that, starting with Fast Five (which is also when the series became a lot of fun), with each subsequent installment, they have to find a way to top the ridiculous thing they did the previous time out.  Flicking a switch to use up a NOS can isn’t cutting it anymore.  I was under the impression that the insanity of Fast 7 could not be topped.  Then the first trailer had a wrecking ball, a tank, and a submarine.  NONE OF THAT TOUCHES THE INSANITY IN THE SECOND TRAILER!!!  There is a point during this short film of vehicular mayhem, where I was screaming at my computer that it had won, and I will submit and just go see if there’s anything left they haven’t already bombarded us with with in two trailers.  The title is still stupid though.  Read below for plot details (ARE YOU GOING FOR PLOT???).

Trailer Time: The Fate of the Furious Trailer #1 *Say it Ain’t So, Dom!*

After managing to pull a miracle out of the tragedy of Paul Walker’s death and turn in a seventh Fast & the Furious that rocketed to $1.5 billion globally, which makes it still the sixth highest grossing film of all-time, I think the series should ended on that triumphant note.  However, this is the age of the franchise, so it was immediately renewed for three more installments (at least) with potential spin-offs for series regulars.  Fast 8 certainly landed a great young director in F. Gary Gray (Straight Outta Compton) and added Oscar winners Charlize Theron and Helen Mirren (really?) to their giant ensemble.  Then they went and put a title on this thing that Telemundo would have rejected as overly melodramatic.  The Fate of the Furious?  Sigh.  Check out the first look at the film, and plot details below from Coming Soon.  I’m certainly intrigued by this trailer and stoked that Kurt Russell and Jason Statham will be back.  What I will keep calling Fast 8 opens next April.
