Jon Stewart is Leaving The Daily Show

The same year we have to say good-bye to David Letterman, the last of the great talk show hosts, we’ll also be losing Jon Stewart.  Last night on The Daily Show, Stewart announced that he would be stepping down from the position he’s held for 17 years.

Taking over for Craig Kilborn (whatever happened to him?), Stewart turned The Daily Show into one of the most powerful political and social debate platforms in the world.  Using his impressive political knowledge and acumen, Stewart would routinely stir the pot and create controversy through humor.  That sparks dialogue and as an ironic result, The Daily Show, to me, has been the most reliable source of news for over a decade (this announcement coming on the same day that NBC announced it would be suspending Nightly News anchorman Brian Williams for fabricating a story about is time in Iraq).

Jon Stewart, The Daily Show

I knew it couldn’t last forever, but I hate to see it go.  It’s been such a staple of reliable, relevant and hilarious lampooning since I was in high school.  Stewart didn’t announce a retirement date and said the details were still being worked out.  His contract with Comedy Central is up in September.  Stewart took a sabbitical from the show last year to direct a feature film, so perhaps he’s headed that way, or maybe, like he said in his announcement he just wants to eat dinner with his family.  As far as a successor, I would say Stephen Colbert if he wasn’t already set to take over for Letterman.  Jon Oliver hosted the show during Stewart’s break in 2014, so I’d consider him a strong possibility.

Jon Stewart, The Daily Show

At any rate, one of the comedic giants is ending a spectacular run.  When he took over, The Daily Show was a fun little show that had a small, cult following.  Now Presidential candidates know they have to appear on the show to make their case.  Stewart, his writers, his “reporters” (many of which have gone on to fame themselves, Stephen Colbert and Steve Carrell went from Daily Show correspondents to superstardom) had the his guts to consistently highlight the absurdity that advertises itself as news or government.

The Daily Show, Jon Stewart

The show will go on, but Jon Stewart’s run on it will never be equaled.  Comedy Central needs to put out some “Best of the Daily Show” Blu Rays so we can revisit the best bits that have made us laugh over the years.  Jon’s made me smile on many a day when I thought that was impossible and for that I have to thank him and I wish him all the luck in the world with whatever direction he decides to take.

Killing Time – July 18, 2013

Killing Time

We’ll make this a quick check-in this week.  Emmy nominations and Comic Con fatigue (aaaand it just started) have deleted my reserve of words.  I pushed through and finally beat Borderlands 2 and in-between watched episodes of Covert Affairs.  This weekend I literally read 8 books.  That’s a lot even for me and may explain why my eyes have been aching for days….

KT milestones this week: 16,000 hits; 1,000 “likes”; and blazed past the 750 posts mark.  Uruguay and Mongolia graced the site for the first time, leaving French Guiana as the only South American country to hold out on me.  What’s up with that?  Would it entice you, French Guiananians….may have got that wrong, to know I know all the dirty words in French?  Hmm?  Intrigued?  Come on in, enjoy the madness.  What did y’all (because they say that in French Guiana) kill time with this week?

Killing Time – July 11, 2013

Killing Time

Suits went by way too quickly and now I think I’ve finally run out of TV binging options.  I’m watching Psych and Covert Affairs, and they’re good, but they’re more watch an episode here and there shows.  I’m looking for shows where you watch 18 in a row.  I think I’ve run out of options there.

I’m still grinding away at the main quest of Borderlands 2 (you die a wholllle lot more in this than in the first game).  I will kill you, Handsome Jack.  I have now listened to you taunt me with your smarmy taunts for thirty hours of turning your psycho army into paste.  I’m coming for you, and I’m bringing absurdly huge guns that fire acid and electricity with me!  Sorry, lost focus there for a minute.  It’s a bad combination of a character that inspires grudges and a person who has never dropped a grudge in his life.

KT milestones this week: 14,000 hits (probably pass 15k today) and Swaziland and Afghanistan visited the site for the first time.  Now that it has come out and landed like a wet turd on the sidewalk (bad visual but an actual quote from a review of it I read), I want to ask you guys….what the HECK is with you and The Lone Ranger trailer?  Given my dread of what was being done to one of my childhood icons, I only posted one trailer for that movie.  That post has gotten more hits than any other post of the 730+ I’ve done in the six months I’ve had this site.  On one hand, it boosted my numbers so that was cool.  On the other hand, I spend hours on some of these articles and that damn trailer was drawing so much attention that I think any time someone typed “lone ranger” into Google, it ended up at that post.  It could have had its own site and beaten me senseless, is what I’m saying.  Fine, all right.  I’m a little obsessed with the stats on the site.  It’s a perfect genetic storm of OCD, a father who’s an engineer and a mother who’s an English professor.  Stop judging me and tell me what you’re killing time with this week!
