Coming out of last year’s Comic Con, I thought Kong Skull Island was the most impressive looking film of the bunch, and I had high hopes for cinema’s ape emeritus going into his first outing since the bloated mess that was Peter Jackson’s King Kong. This film takes place in the MONARCH Universe (I’m not sure if there’s an official name) along with Gareth Edward’s Godzilla and the upcoming-wait for it-Godzilla vs. King Kong. Like Godzilla, the film gets the monster right. This is an interesting take on Kong, and one that does him justice. The problem, like in Godzilla, are the humans surrounding him. This Friday, King Kong will return to movie theaters for the first time since Peter Jackson’s bloated misfire. Coming off The Lord of the Rings, Jackson could have done whatever he wanted with a blank check, and he blew it on a 3-hour plus retelling of cinema’s most famous ape. It honestly was a case of someone who loves the material, loving it to death. We don’t even get on the boat to Skull Island until over an hour into the picture, and every crew member is not as interesting as the members of the Fellowship of the Ring, but they sure got the screen time. Well, if Kong: Skull Island accomplishes nothing else, it will have made some of the best-produced, most stylish, gorgeously cinematic trailers of recent years. I really liked Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla, but this looks ten times better and if it is, and they can make a showdown film between these monsters as epic as this looks….then we will have achieved true monster awesomeness. Kong Skull Island is Film #2 in March Movie Madness 2017 and opens March 10, 2017.

I don’t think I can remember a non-Comic Con week where so many trailers have dropped like this one. The second trailer for Kong: Skull Island has premiered, and hold on to your butts, people, we’re in for something amazing. I don’t like this trailer as much as the first, and I’m a little worried John C. Reilly’s character is going to Jar Jar this thing, but mostly I’m in awe at how amazing this looks. The onslaught of trailers from Comic Con’s busiest day continues with the first full trailer for 2017’s Kong: Skull Island. Visually arresting and boasting a cast with Brie Larson, John Goodman, Samuel L. Jackson, and Tom Hiddleston, this just jumped onto my 2017 MUST SEE list.
