Another bit of mystery surrounding Star Wars Episode VII has been revealed as today Lucasfilm released the name and a mo-cap image of Andy Serkis on the Episode VII set. Serkis will be playing a character called “Supreme Leader Snoke”, and no one called “Supreme Leader” is ever a good guy. Is this guy in the remnants of the Emprire? Is this who Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) answers to? December 18, 2015, still seems like a long, long ways away. Further details from Coming Soon below. No sooner do I post the rest of the Episode VII Vanity Fair shoot, then this leaks: Gwendoline Christie’s character for the upcoming Star Wars film. She is none other than the super stormtrooper who wowwed us in the trailer. The character’s name is Captain Phasma and is described only as a “First Order Officer”.
We’re more used to seeing Christie look like this:
The 6 foot 3 inch actress plays fan-favorite character Brienne of Tarth on HBO’s hit Game of Throne series. It’s pretty clear she’s not on the side of the angels in Episode VII, but what The First Order is, we’ll have to wait and see. MAY THE FOURTH BE WITH YOU!!!
This video shows photographer Annie Leibovitz as she preps the photos and cover below to this month’s issue of Vanity Fair. Probably the highlight is a look at Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) without his cloak and mask. He looks distinctly less intimidating than the Snowtroopers herding him. More 4th goodness below including Lupita Nyong’o playing her motion capture character, who is a pirate by the name of Maz Kanata. Then, of course there are Oscar Isaac as Poe Dameron, a group of of various alien creatures, and members of the film crew, such as director J.J. Abrams.
Alongside the slew of astoundingly fantastic things that have been stunning Star Wars fans into a kind of stupidly giddy delirium this week are this promotional posters featuring the new Stormtrooper design and Kylo Ren (cross lightsaber guy). I think it’s interesting he has no “Darth” title. Is he our new Vader (since he may be keeping the old Vader’s head as brick-a-brack)? I think it’s more likely he’s a “phantom menace” (sorry, sorry) and the real evil is yet to come and we’re being distracted by an awesome character design. Drink these in and decide which is your computer wallpaper until the next time Disney issues a press release.
I am old enough to remember when the Topps cards for Return of the Jedi were coming out in packs and kids were going nuts over them. Today, one year to the day from the opening of Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens, Disney/Lucasfilm released these cards that give us character names at least for those that were shown in the teaser trailer. As Star Wars fans, these are names we’re going to be babbling millions of times so it’s kind of funny to see them for the first time. I don’t have much insight other than to say that Kylo Ren doesn’t seem like a Sith name, so who is he and what’s he doing with a Sith lightsaber?
