In Theaters This Week (9/23/2016) – The Magnificent Seven, Storks, The Dressmaker

Kate Winslet, The Dressmaker

Each Thursday we look at what is going to be coming out in theaters this weekend, show you the trailers for the big releases, predict the box office winner and just generally give you enough of a carrot to pull you through the rest of the work week.  September 23rd gives us ANOTHER remake, an animated release, and a film where Kate Winslet makes dresses (called The Dressmaker…..s’how I knew). Movie Review: Independence Day – Resurgence (2016) *I Was Rooting for the Aliens*

Jeff Goldblum, Brent Spiner, Independence Day: Resurgence

Though the world of Independence Day has been waiting 20 years for the aliens to return; moviegoers have not.  Things are very, very different from the cinematic world of 1996.  Returning to this universe would have required doing what the original did: showing us F/X we simply had not seen before on that scale, while charming us with the human-level performances.  Did Independence Day: Resurgence achieve that?  Let’s just say you have no idea how much charisma Will Smith has until he goes from being the breakout star of your film to a portrait on the White House wall. Each Thursday we look at what is going to be coming out in theaters this weekend, show you the trailers for the big releases, predict the box office winner and just generally give you enough of a carrot to pull you through the rest of the work week.  June 24th brings two new wide releases.  Twenty years after the release of the original (pause to feel very, very old), the aliens are back to squish our landmarks in Independence Day: Resurgence.  Also opening is Matthew McConaughey in a little-known story from the Civil War: The Free State of Jones.  Can either take down the juggernaut that is Dory as it just keeps swimming through animated box office records? Trailer Time: Independence Day – Resurgence Trailer #3 (2016) *Well That Trailer Was Even Bigger….Than The Last TWO!*

The first two trailers weren’t big enough.  Today a FIVE MINUTE trailer for Independence Day: Resurgence has been unveiled.  The first film hasn’t aged terribly well, but I have to say, this will at least LOOK spectacular.  I do love that Roland Emmerich is so aware of his penchant for squashing landmarks that he worked it into the script,  ID42 will open on June 24, 2016. Plot synopsis below.

We always knew they were coming back. After INDEPENDENCE DAY catastrophe on an unimaginable scale. Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare us for the aliens’ advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction.

Trailer Time: Independence Day – Resurgence Trailer #2 (2016) *Well That Trailer Was Even Bigger….Than The First One*

This has been a huge week for summer blockbuster trailers, and Independence Day: Resurgence gets into the act with its second trailer.  Will Roland Emmerich leave any monument on Earth standing?  The man lives to destroy iconic architecture.  This trailer forms more of a link between the first and second films (btw how is Brent Spiner’s character still alive?) and Will Smith even gets a cameo….as a dead man in a photo, but he made the trailer!  ID42 will open on June 24, 2016. Plot synopsis below.
