How do you pick just one scene from this film (you can read my full Guardians 2 review here)? While most sequels go bigger, Guardians 2 actually is a much smaller, character-driven film. With this being the last time to see Peter Quill and company before The Infinity War, director James Gunn I think wisely decided to slow it down a little (for the Guardians, graded on a curve) and give you time with each character. They’re going to be as integral to the war as The Avengers and we’ve had at least four or five films with even the junior members, but only two with the Guardians.
The film is a non-stop funny machine. It’s line after line after gag after gag, and while I think the first film is a hair better, I think this film is funnier. Yondu (Michael Rooker) joined the Guardians in film #2, and the awesomeness of his whistle-controlled arrow of death was unleashed in a way that you wouldn’t have even thought possible. He and Rocket destroying a ship with it is my highlight, but I’m not going to deprive you of the best of Baby Groot (to be only topped by sullen teenage Groot in the credits) and Drax (Dave Bautista continues to amaze me; he OWNS this role and clearly has so much fun playing him). Get your MCU hats on! Issue #17 is out this weekend!
New details on the next two Marvel movies after Thor. Ronan is a fantastic character and will bring the Kree into the MCU, plus more THANOS! I think Cap 2 is shaping up to be the most pivotal film in Phase 2 pre-Avengers 2…
“Ronan The Accuser WILL be the film’s lead villain and Thanos will indeed play a large role in the overall scheme of things. In terms of iconic locations, The Guardians will operate out of their base of operations, called Knowhere, a space station with the ability to teleport throughout the universe. Lastly, our source confirmed that there would be no members of THE AVENGERS featured in the film, but that it does take place in the same time/universe as the current phase of films.”
“This is pretty much a sequel to THE AVENGERS and plays the biggest role in leading into THE AVENGERS 2. In addition, the sequel will go more in-depth on Black Widow’s back story and gadgetry.”
Benicio Del Toro has signed on for next year’s Guardian’s of the Galaxy. Not only for G of G, Del Toro signed a mulit-picture deal to play a major player in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Who it could be is wide open to speculation. The team seems pretty set with Starlord (Chris Pratt), Rocket Raccoon, Groot, Gamora (Zoe Saldana), and Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista). He could voice Groot or Rocket but that seems a waste of an Oscar nominated actor. Could he be Thanos? We do know that John C. Reily has signed up as roughly the Agent Coulson equivalent of the cosmic arm of the MCU and that Glenn Close has signed to play the head of the Nova Corps (Marvel’s answer to the Green Lanterns).
With this having the smallest built-in audience of any picture in phase two, Marvel is being smart and going out and getting name stars to fill these roles. I’m extremely excited and intrigued to see how this is going to come together. For a primer on the Guardians of the Galaxy, click on the link and check the piece I did awhile back. Guardians of the Galaxy will rocket (punny) its way into theaters in April 2014.
