My Favorite Scene: King Kong (2005) “Kong vs. T-Rexes”

This Friday, King Kong will return to movie theaters for the first time since Peter Jackson’s bloated misfire.  Coming off The Lord of the Rings, Jackson could have done whatever he wanted with a blank check, and he blew it on a 3-hour plus retelling of cinema’s most famous ape.  It honestly was a case of someone who loves the material, loving it to death.  We don’t even get on the boat to Skull Island until over an hour into the picture, and every crew member is not as interesting as the members of the Fellowship of the Ring, but they sure got the screen time. In Theaters This Week (4/8/2016) – Hardcore Henry, The Boss and Demolition

Melissa McCarthy, The Boss
Each Thursday we look at what is going to be coming out in theaters this weekend, show you the trailers for the big releases, predict the box office winner and just generally give you enough of a carrot to pull you through the rest of the work week.  April 8th…..I won’t lie to you, people.  It’s grim.  The dark shadow of Batman vs. Superman is likely going to stay looming above theaters until Disney returns next week to save us.  There are three new offerings to check out. The Divergent Series: Allegiant, Shailene Woodley, Tris Prior
Each Thursday we look at what is going to be coming out in theaters this weekend, show you the trailers for the big releases, predict the box office winner and just generally give you enough of a carrot to pull you through the rest of the work week.  March 18th has four new releases, but your best bet for quality entertainment is probably to stay home and boot up Netflix. Movie Review: The Divergent Series – Insurgent (2015) *Now Begins the Great Meandering*

Insurgent, The Divergent Series: Insurgent

I saw The Divergent Series: Insurgent (which will hereafter be called simply “Insurgent” like a sane person would say it) several days ago and have been sitting on this review to try to remove as much of my God-given snark from my system as possible.  So keep that in mind.  Also, because the header was already ridiculously long, I didn’t include a spoiler warning, but I do so now.

I liked Divergent.  Not loved.  Liked.  You can click here to read my review of it and I felt like I gave it a pretty fair-to-generous shake.  I also mentioned in that review that there were storm clouds on the horizon since I’d read the whole series and the thunderstorm begins to pour here in Insurgent. Trailer Time: Insurgent Trailer #2 (2015)

I liked, didn’t love, Divergent.  It was a pretty good adaptation of the book, and it moved along at a good pace with some quality actors.  I’ve read all three books and Insurgent is where the series starts to go pear-shaped, in my opinion, before it meanders into the epic wasteland slog that was Allegiant (and that they’re splitting into two films is the dumbest split yet in this new franchise-extending trend).  I like Veronica Roth.  I think she’s a good writer and I’ll read her next stuff, but I don’t feel like this series was plotted past the first book.  When you compare it to Harry Potter or The Hunger Games books, its just not in the same league.  The first Insurgent teaser was….odd.  Perhaps this will be a case of the book being eclipsed by the movie.  Perhaps not.  Insurgent opens wide on March 20, 2015
