Trailer Time: The Circle (2017) *Tom Hanks, Emma Watson, John Boyega*

Emma Watson, though she’s been globally recognizable most of her life thanks to Harry Potter, looks like she’s going to be breaking out in 2017 into one of the most in demand lead actresses in Hollywood. She’s got Beauty and the Beast in March, which would be enough, but the following month she shares the screen with Tom Hanks and John Boyega in the film adaptation of David Eggers’ acclaimed novel, The Circle.  This is a fantastic first look at the film, which will open April 28, 2017 (so it will have one week to be mulled over before Guardians Vol. 2 flattens the entire box office).  Synopsis below:
Tom Hanks, The Circle

A young female tech worker (Emma Watson) takes a job at a powerful internet corporation, quickly rises up the company’s ranks, and soon finds herself in a perilous situation, which that involves privacy, surveillance and freedom. She comes to learn that her decisions and actions will determine the future of humanity.

My Favorite Scene: Parks & Recreation Season 5 “The Episode VII Filibuster”

Amy Poehler is the most criminally unrecognized lead actress in a comedy in recent memory.  Why does she not have three Emmys for creating the fantastic Leslie Knope on Parks & Recreation while they keep slinging Emmys at Julia Louis-Dreyfus for the painfully unfunny Veep?  One last chance to get it right this fall, guys?  Poehler is also currently showing her talent as Joy in Pixar’s Inside Out, but this clip from the fifth season of her show is all about guest star Patton Oswalt.

This is not actually the scene that aired.  Oswalt plays a character determined to filibuster at a Pawnee, IN, City Council meeting and they didn’t bother to write anything for the comedian, they just told him to talk about whatever he wanted for as long as he could.  Uber Star Wars fan Oswalt then crafted his idea for for the plot of Star Wars: Episode VII and to describe it is to take away from its sheer majesty.  It is a geek fugue and he literally ties nearly all of nerdiness together in an epic rant that lasts eight minutes.  It’s one of the most impressive pieces of improv I’ve ever seen and that whole season was brilliantly funny so it’s telling my favorite scene is a rough cut.  Watch and behold!  A fan even made a poster for Oswalt’s vision.  It’s that good.

Trailer Time: Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 2 Comic Con Trailer (ABC – 2014)

Patton Oswalt is featured in the first teaser for Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD Season 2.  Season one was a slow burn, but the last six episodes showed the potential of the show and its potential to enhance and integrate with the Marvel Cinematic Universe.  The teaser hints at a new member of the time Bobbi Morse aka Mockingbird.

A member of S.H.I.E.L.D. and The Avengers in the comics, Mockingbird was first created by Gerry Conway and Barry Smith and introduced in Astonishing Tales #6 in 1971. Though she doesn’t have any super powers, she was injected with an experimental serum that gave her enhanced strength and speed. The character also became romantically involved with Hawkeye in the source material.

The cast of the show includes Clark Gregg as Phil Coulson, Ming-Na Wen as Agent Melinda May, Brett Dalton as Agent Grant Ward, Chloe Bennet as Skye, Iain De Caestecker as Agent Leo Fitz, and Elizabeth Henstridge as Agent Jemma Simmons

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 2 will premiere on September 23rd.

Movie Review: The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013)

Ben Stiller, Walter Mitty, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is a two-hour movie based on a James Thurber short story that it takes about eight minutes to read aloud.  In adapting children’s books and other pieces where there is so little material to adapt faithfully…has it ever worked?  I’m seriously asking to be reminded of an example.  Mitty is a wonderful story about a man who drifts off into daydreams of adventure while going through a day’s worth of mundane errands.  Danny Kaye made it into a feature in the 1950’s and now Ben Stiller both directs and stars in this modern adaptation. Patton Oswalt’s Star Wars Vision Gets Animated

This video is the most posted video now in the history (albeit brief of this website).  The phenomenon that is Patton Oswalt’s crazily improvised premise for Star Wars Episode VII continues to seize the hearts and minds of sad, pale friendless geeks like myself.  First, Entertainment Weekly gave the bizarre opus its own poster.  Now someone has gone to the admirable time killing effort of animating the rant.

For those who somehow missed the off-the-cuff feat of nerditry last month, Patton Oswalt was guest starring on an episode of Parks and Recreation.  His character was filibustering at a Pawnee, Indiana City Council meeting.  The writers hadn’t scripted anything for Oswalt and just asked him to talk about anything for as long as he could.  Oswalt proceeded to outline in phenomenal detail his pitch for Star Wars Episode VII.  The pitch merges the Star Wars and Marvel Universes with Greek Mythology into a sort of geekly fever dream.  Above, I have first the original version of the take from the show, then the animated version with Entertainment Weekly’s poster below.
