Venom Trailer #2 (2018) *The World Has Enough Superheroes*

Venom’s second full trailer focuses less on the film’s plot and more on showing off Spider-Man’s morally ambiguous doppelganger.  The Venom teaser took a lot of heat for not really showing the symbiote (a word I have apparently been mispronouncing for 30 years).  The first Venom trailer was more story-based but did show a lot of Venom.  The second Venom trailer has more Venom than Tom Hardy.  Aside from the lack of a spider-symbol on his chest (given the absence of Spider-Man from Sony’s Spiderverse, that wouldn’t make sense) Venom looks pretty much exactly as Todd McFarlane drew him when he debuted in Amazing Spider-Man.  There is a ton of Venom fanservice going on in this film, which if nothing else, seems like it is going to be a very different type of comic book movie.  We’ll see if that’s a good or a bad thing when Venom hits theaters October 5, 2018.

Venom Trailer #1 (2018) “WE are Venom!”

Sony has released the first full trailer for Venom.  The teaser trailer had a good atmosphere to it, but we didn’t actually get to see Venom.  Well, we’ve seen him now!  There’s a lot about the trailer I like that Spider-Man 3 completely got wrong with the character, there’s also a few things about it that give me pause (not the least of which is that is NOT how I have been saying “symbiote” for 25 years).  I like they establish Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy) as a decent guy.  I like that Venom is its own personality and that together they are a “we” entity.  That’s very true to the comics.  I love the look of the character.  Some of the F/X seem a little off, but in a trailer six months out that’s tough to judge.  It’s recently been reported that Woody Harrelson’s role in the film will be Carnage, but we’ll have to see when Venom hits theaters October 5, 2018.

Venom Teaser Trailer #1 (2018) *A Venomless Venom Trailer*

Sony has released the first teaser for Venom and it’s a true teaser, giving very little away about the film.  Venom, butchered in Spider-Man 3, is one of the most popular villains/anti-heroes (depending on the host) in Marvel Comics, and Tom Hardy is a great choice to embody that.  I’m not sure what Sony intends with its Spider-Man-free Spiderverse.  I think rather than give Tom Holland up, Disney would rather buy Sony at this point.  What we do know about the film is summarized by Coming Soon below.  The film also stars Michelle Williams, Riz Ahmed, Jenny Slate, and Woody Harrelson.  Venom will hit theaters October 5, 2018.

Movie Review: Jason Bourne (2016) *Is Bourne Back?*

share

If you ignore the tacked-on Bourne Legacy, the Bourne series has been the standard in action-adventure.  It’s grounded realism and intelligent plots were a good part of the reason the Bond series had to be dragged out of the 1970’s.  Jason Bourne is the first film reuniting series star Matt Damon and director of films two and three, Paul Greengrass, in nine years.  Was Bourne going to be back to his old tricks, or should this series have ended with The Bourne Ultimatum? Trailer Time: Jason Bourne Trailer #1 (2016) *You Know His Name*

After the brief nightmare that was the Bourne Legacy, Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass are returning for the franchise’s fifth installment.  Bourne has been off the grid for years, but this first trailer doesn’t make it seem like he’s lost a step.  Maybe we’ll finally get answers as to what exactly is his relationship to Julia Stiles’ character, which is a mystery dating back to the first film.  Easily one of my most anticipated films of the summer.  Jason Bourne returns to theaters on July 29, 2016.
