When Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim came out, I didn’t initially love it, but over the years the earnest joy with which del Toro embraced his concept and owned it won me over. While both Pacific Rim and Transformers feature giant robots, I honestly wouldn’t think to compare them, but Pacific Rim: Uprising reminded me of a Transformers sequel. Eye-rollingly dumb and awful enough to diminish your appreciation for the original source material, and assuming more sequels without the capacity to even succeed in one. This wasn’t just disappointing; this was the worst film I’ve seen in 2018 so far. Continue reading Movie Review: Pacific Rim: Uprising (2018) *A Disgrace to All Jaegers*
Pacific Rim may not be del Toro’s best work, but you can’t help but admire the unabashed enthusiasm of it. Like a little kid with a $100 million budget to make a film about giant monsters fighting giant robots, del Toro goes over-the-top all the way from beginning to end, and if you put your brain in a jar, it’s just a ton of fun. It also doesn’t hurt he named the robots Jaegers, which happens to be MY name, so the sheer auditory rush of 30% of the lines of dialogue in this film is a very personal, very 10-year-old gone mad kind of glee.
The best parts of the film are-wait for it-the fights between giant monsters and giant Jaegers. My favorite fight is the return to action for the hero robot: Gipsy Rose as it takes on the Kaiju nicknamed “Leatherback”. Any fight where things the size of skyscrapers are pummeling each other with cargo containers is something that is just fundamentally RIGHT. The film is also notable for containing perhaps my favorite character name of all time: Idris Elba’s Stacker Pentecost. That character’s son (played by John Boyega) will star in the film’s sequel, which has-dare I say-Jaeger sized boots to fill? RISE JAEGERS RISE!
Pacific Rim: Uprising does not have to be great cinema. It need merely be big, stupid fun for me to be completely onboard. It may not equal the del Toro directed first film, but if you think that’s going to prevent me, as a guy whose last name is Yaeger, from going to see a movie in which giant robots called Jaegers save the day…..you are sadly, sadly mistaken. It could be the worst movie of the year and still serve as a two hour self-affirmation journey for me. So when the Kaijus return in March….I shall be there! RISE JAEGERS RISE!…………..IN GLORIOUS IMAX!!!! Continue reading Pacific Rim: Uprising Trailer IMAX Trailer (2018) “Nothing Can Prepare You”
Michael Mirasol has created this great supercut montage devoted to robots through the history of film. From Metropolis, The Day the Earth Stood Still and classic science fiction all the way to WALL-E, The Iron Giant and Pacific Rim, we get a very cool look at the classic robots in cinema. Appropriate on a weekend dominated by Transformers at the box office.
