Movie Review: Solo – A Star Wars Story (2018) “I’ve Got a Good Feeling About This!”

Alden Ehrenreich and Donald Glover in Solo: A Star Wars Story
Anyone who has followed the troubled production of Solo: A Star Wars Story is justifiably nervous about the second Star Wars spin-off film.  Anyone who felt extremely disillusioned by the atonal mess that was Star Wars: The Last Jedi might feel that Disney has gone completely off the reservation with the franchise.  Those are both understandable sentiments.  The spoiler-free nuts and bolts on Solo is that the film feels much more like a Star Wars film than The Last Jedi did, is full of fan service, does justice to fan-favorite characters, has some surprises up its sleeve, and while it takes awhile to get going, is ultimately a fun outing.

Solo: A Star Wars Story Trailer #1 (2018) *THAT is More Like It!*

Solo: A Star Wars Story has had a troubled production (to say the least), and follows on the heels of the financially successful but fan-dividing Star Wars: The Last Jedi.  The first teaser for the film was…underwhelming; however, the full trailer looks like the movie may actually be a ton of fun.  It seems a whole lot less than a heist film and more of Han, Lando (Donald Glover is going to own this), and Chewie on their first adventure together.  You can start to see the point of the film, which is to show how Han ended up the man we met in the Mos Eisley Cantina.  I have hope about this thing for the first time.  Seriously, seriously tempered hope after TLJ, but a wee bit, which is a giant change from before I watched this trailer.  Read below for Coming Soon’s summary.  Solo: A Star Wars Story is coming to theaters Memorial Day. Solo: A Star Wars Story Teaser #1 (2018) *Nerf Herder: Year One*

Solo: A Star Wars Story has had a troubled production (to say the least), and follows on the heels of the financially successful but fan-dividing Star Wars: The Last Jedi.  We got a sneak peek of the 10th Star Wars film last night at the Super Bowl, but Lucasfilm has released the full first teaser today and my reaction is……ok.  It looks great.  There aren’t any fist-pumping moments for me.  I’m not sold on Alden Ehrenreich as Solo.  The plot seems to be standard caper fare, but at this point, who really knows?  I’m less excited about this film than any Star Wars film since Episode II so my expectations are rather low.  I hope I’m wrong.  I want to be wrong.  The teaser doesn’t really give me enough information to make a decision one way or another.  Read below for Coming Soon’s summary.  Solo: A Star Wars Story is coming to theaters Memorial Day. Han Solo Movie Wraps; Official Title Announced

It’s not brain surgery, but it’s an elegant title.  The second anthology film will be called Solo: A Star Wars Story.  Director Ron Howard announced the title today as principal photography has wrapped.  While I’m enormously excited and positive regarding The Last Jedi (which opens in only 59 days), I have a lot of trepidation regarding Solo.  A lot of them stem from the weird firing of original directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller (click here to read more on that).  To some degree, I-like a lot of Star Wars fans-can’t imagine anyone but Harrison Ford as the smuggler, and I don’t have enough confidence in Alden Ehrenreich to overcome that prejudice.  I DO think Donald Glover will destroy a young Lando Clarissian.  What makes me most nervous about the film is how Disney has refused to budge on the May 23, 2018, release date.  That’s not a lot of time to smooth out the wrinkles on a film with a troubled production history PLUS do all the massive amount of post-production work that is required in any Star Wars film.  But say all that goes GREAT and the film is fantastic…..I still think Disney is setting it up to fail. In Theaters This Week (10/28/2016) – Inferno, Before the Flood

Before the Flood, Leonardo DiCaprio

Each Thursday we look at what is going to be coming out in theaters this weekend, show you the trailers for the big releases, predict the box office winner and just generally give you enough of a carrot to pull you through the rest of the work week.  October 28th closes out the most mediocre October that I can ever remember with a weekend Tom Hanks can’t even save.
