Chris Evans’s 10 Best Movies

Chris Evans

Chris Evans is an actor who has made a career about either being the best part of bad comic book adaptations (Fantastic Four), or one of the best things about ones you instantly recognize (MCU) or ones you may now know are comic book adaptations (Scott Pilgrim, The Losers and Snowpiercer).  Evans is certainly most recognizable for his seven appearances as Steve Rogers/Captain America.  The Captain America films have been the best individual trilogy of any Marvel Cinematic Universe solo hero, and Evans’s principled, evolving Rogers has been the moral fulcrum of the Avengers.  The actor tends to make smaller films when not in superhero mode, the best of which (Gifted) really show both the humor and talented dramatic skills Evans brings to every film in which he takes part.

Top 10: Film Villains With Justifiable Motives

WatchMojo has a great idea for a list this week with the Top 10: Movie Villains With Justifiable Motives.  The best villains believe they’re the hero of their own stories.  The elite make the audience believe their actions, no matter how heinous, are justifiable.  Think of the best screen villains, and you usually know why they’re doing the things they are.  One of the MCU’s biggest problems until recently was a lack of motivation given to the villain.  Most non-MCU comic book films focus on the villain almost to the detriment of the hero (most Batman films), but the MCU took the opposite route and poured all its character development time into the heroes.  Phase 3 took a different approach and gave us more nuanced villains like Ego, Killmonger, Zemo, and even, yes, Thanos, were given a twisted logic for their crusades.  WM went with The Vulture for their list, and that’s a good pick.  I actually don’t have much of a problem with any of their picks: Silva from Skyfall, Syndrome from The Incredibles, Koba, Magneto, etc.  I think the only flaw in the list is that it doesn’t go back any further than 1982’s Blade Runner for candidates, but I’m sure everyone can think of a few baddies who had motivation enough for some sympathy.  Who would you have put on this list?  Javier Bardem in Skyfall

My Favorite Scene: Spider-Man: Homecoming “A Poor Interrogation” (2017)

Spider-Man: Homecoming got so many things right about the character of Peter Parker that the Raimi and Webb films flubbed, but I think the thing I like the best about Tom Holland’s Spider-Man is….he’s not very good.  Don’t get me wrong, he’s enormously powerful, smart, and talented.  Everyone can see it….however, he’s also just a high school sophomore and, by definition, kind of an idiot.  There are two scenes that highlight Peter’s youth in the film in different ways.

My favorite is easily his attempt at a Batman-esque interrogation of The Prowler (Donald Glover).  Badly utilizing his suit’s vocal scrambling, he spectacularly fails to impress Glover (who if we want to get super-geeky and project down the line a long ways, is the uncle of the Marvel Universe’s other Spider-Man: Miles Morales).

Downey Jr. and Holland have a fantastic dynamic as Tony Stark and Peter Parker, and 10 years into the MCU, you can have scenes like this one.  Where we’ve seen Tony make questionable choice after questionable choice and in this kid he sees himself, but with the chance to do what he wanted to achieve with Iron Man sans his personal baggage.  There is no more wisdom that Stark could distill from what lessons he’s learned when he snaps at Peter, “If you can’t do this without the suit, then you shouldn’t be doing it at all!”

Jennifer Connelly’s 10 Best Movies

Jennifer Connelly

Jennifer Connelly had a stellar 2017, making a welcome comeback.  I’ve loved Connelly since I was a kid and she was the girl trapped in Jim Henson’s Labyrinth, but she’s tremendously underrated as an actress.  Requiem for a Dream, A Beautiful Mind (for which she deservedly won an Oscar), and Blood Diamond alone are enough to prove you’re one of the most talented actresses working.  It’s just good to see her working more often.  In 2017, she joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as “Karen”, the AI in Spider-Man’s upgraded suit in Spider-Man: Homecoming.  In real life, Connelly is married to actor Paul Bettany, who provided the same service for Tony Stark as JARVIS before he transitioned to The Vision.  She was also a lynch pin in a great ensemble cast in the firefighter drama Only the Brave.  It looks like she has projects lined up, and I’m looking forward to seeing more of her on TV and in films to come.
