My Favorite Scene: Spider-Man: Homecoming “A Poor Interrogation” (2017)

Spider-Man: Homecoming got so many things right about the character of Peter Parker that the Raimi and Webb films flubbed, but I think the thing I like the best about Tom Holland’s Spider-Man is….he’s not very good.  Don’t get me wrong, he’s enormously powerful, smart, and talented.  Everyone can see it….however, he’s also just a high school sophomore and, by definition, kind of an idiot.  There are two scenes that highlight Peter’s youth in the film in different ways.

My favorite is easily his attempt at a Batman-esque interrogation of The Prowler (Donald Glover).  Badly utilizing his suit’s vocal scrambling, he spectacularly fails to impress Glover (who if we want to get super-geeky and project down the line a long ways, is the uncle of the Marvel Universe’s other Spider-Man: Miles Morales).

Downey Jr. and Holland have a fantastic dynamic as Tony Stark and Peter Parker, and 10 years into the MCU, you can have scenes like this one.  Where we’ve seen Tony make questionable choice after questionable choice and in this kid he sees himself, but with the chance to do what he wanted to achieve with Iron Man sans his personal baggage.  There is no more wisdom that Stark could distill from what lessons he’s learned when he snaps at Peter, “If you can’t do this without the suit, then you shouldn’t be doing it at all!”

Jennifer Connelly’s 10 Best Movies

Jennifer Connelly

Jennifer Connelly had a stellar 2017, making a welcome comeback.  I’ve loved Connelly since I was a kid and she was the girl trapped in Jim Henson’s Labyrinth, but she’s tremendously underrated as an actress.  Requiem for a Dream, A Beautiful Mind (for which she deservedly won an Oscar), and Blood Diamond alone are enough to prove you’re one of the most talented actresses working.  It’s just good to see her working more often.  In 2017, she joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as “Karen”, the AI in Spider-Man’s upgraded suit in Spider-Man: Homecoming.  In real life, Connelly is married to actor Paul Bettany, who provided the same service for Tony Stark as JARVIS before he transitioned to The Vision.  She was also a lynch pin in a great ensemble cast in the firefighter drama Only the Brave.  It looks like she has projects lined up, and I’m looking forward to seeing more of her on TV and in films to come.

POLL RESULTS: What’s the Best Spidey Movie?

In the contest for “Best Spider-Man Movie”, KT readers have dubbed the newest the best.  Spider-Man: Homecoming is the sixth Spider-Man movie since Tobey Maguire first started slinging webs in 2002.  He and Sam Raimi made three films before the franchise was rebooted with Andrew Garfield and Marc Webb in 2012.  Then, following the disastrous The Amazing Spider-Man 2 in 2014, Sony decided to lease Spider-Man back to Marvel so Spider-Man could make his debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a small role in 2015’s Captain America: Civil War.  Holland rolled that perfect performance as the wall crawler into a spectacular feature debut that is closing in on $700 million globally.  It was only ever a contest between Homecoming and Spider-Man 2 (which, to my mind, are the only good Spider-Man films).  Homecoming was dominating the poll for most of the month, but held off a late charge from Raimi’s best film to win 46% to 38%.  Spider-Man and even The Amazing Spider-Man got some votes, but not a single bit of love for Spider-Man 3 or The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (so good going, guys, I don’t have to lecture you lol).  Look for a new poll soon, thank you so much for voting, and start thinking about September when we have our 5th Annual Best Show on TV Poll!  Will The Flash defend, or will we have a fifth different show in five years?
