The Equalizer 2 Trailer #2 (2018) “There Is No Equal”

Denzel Washington returns to one of his signature roles in the first sequel of his career. Robert McCall serves an unflinching justice for the exploited and oppressed – but how far will he go when that is someone he loves?

In the first film, Denzel Washington starred as Robert McCall, a former black ops commando who has faked his death to live a quiet life in Boston. When he comes out of his self-imposed retirement to rescue a young girl, Teri (Chloë Grace Moretz), he finds himself face to face with ultra-violent Russian gangsters. As he serves vengeance against those who brutalize the helpless, McCall’s desire for justice is reawakened. If someone has a problem, the odds are stacked against them, and they have nowhere else to turn, McCall will help. He is The Equalizer.

Director Antoine Fuqua (Training Day, The Magnificent Seven) returns for the sequel, which also stars Pedro Pascal, Ashton Sanders, Bill Pullman, and Melissa Leo. Screenwriter Richard Wenk (Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, The Expendables 2) also returned to write the screenplay.

Fuqua’s 2014 adaptation of the 1980s television series The Equalizer grossed over $192 million worldwide and co-starred Chloe Moretz, Marton Csokas, Bill Pullman and Melissa Leo.

Denzel Washington in The Equalizer 2

The Equalizer 2 Trailer #1 (2018) “All Enemies Are Not Created Equal”

Denzel Washington is one of only a handful of actors that I will go see literally anything that he does.  He and Tom Hanks are, in my opinion, the two greatest actors of their generation, and probably the only two actors whose entire filmography I’ve seen.  I don’t tend to like Washington’s pairings with Antoine Fuqua, though I did enjoy their update of The Magnificent Seven, and though it isn’t a great film, The Equalizer is a great revenge/action flick.  It will also change the way you look at a Home Depot forever.  Washington is returning to the role of Robert McCall.  In The Equalizer 2, it looks like McCall’s past, hinted at in the first film, is coming home to roost, and in trying to tie up the loose end he’s considered…..well those people clearly didn’t watch what happened in that Home Depot in the first film or they’d have left him and his alone.  The Equalizer 2 opens July 20, 2018.

Trailer Time: The Equalizer Trailer #2 (2014) Plus New Poster! Denzel is Back!

I don’t know if this is going to be raised any higher than some of the rote Denzel movies we’ve seen from him, but it’s never boring him watching him dominate the screen.  This kind of looks like “What if Shaft worked at Home Depot?” but the trailers have been compelling.  The Equalizer opens wide September 26th.

Top 5: Hopes For a Good Movie in September

Top 5

It’s tough to contemplate after a summer that was, at best, erratic, but we’re now entering the biggest dead zone in the cinema calendar.  The dog days of summer, late August and September are not traditional fonts of excellent films.  With the exception of Looper a few years ago, I can’t remember the last time a September film factored into any “best of the year” discussion.  Let’s try to remain optimistic (yes, it is completely against my nature, but it’s Friday so I’m prone to fits of shiny thinking).  Here are five films, and their trailers, that may break through the September blues. Trailer Time: The Equalizer International Trailer #1 (2014)

When I did my profile of Denzel Washington, I lamented his …laziness, for lack of a better word, in the types of projects he chooses.  For every Flight that reminds us that he’s one of the best actors in the world, there are 2 Guns and The Equalizer.  I feel like I’ve already seen this film.  I’ve never been impressed by the pairing of Antone Fuqua  and Denzel; not even for Training Day.  I’ll probably see it and I hope I’m surprised by it, but I’m more disappointed it’s happening and it’s the only thing on his horizon.  The film opens September 26th.
