While the Oscars were embarrassing themselves yesterday, we lost one of the great character actors of the last 30 years. Bill Paxton passed away yesterday after complications from heart surgery at the all-too-young age of 61. I am so tired of writing obituaries, so my new policy is that unless it’s someone with whom I have a special connection (Robin Williams or Mary Tyler Moore, for example), obituaries go on the Facebook page and the deceased’s career will be celebrated in the next Their 10 Best.
From the mid-1980’s through the end of the 1990’s, Bill Paxton was in some of the most memorable films of the era: The Terminator, Aliens, Titanic, Apollo 13, and a host of others. Just recently, he turned in one of my favorite of his performances in Edge of Tomorrow, taking a role that literally does nothing but repeat a speech over and over and making it new each time. I have never watched Paxton’s successful HBO series, Big Love, but he was a brief part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, serving as the “Big Bad” in season one of Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD. Like the also recently lost John Hurt, Paxton was seldom the leading man (the exception being what I think is his best performance in A Simple Plan), but he made ensembles great, and he’ll be sorely missed.

If you’ve spent any time on YouTube at all, you know people are desperate for subscribers. The last 10-30 seconds of almost any YouTube video are a needy cry for help from whatever channel you’re watching, but if you’re a movie fan, and you want consistently awesome and inventive lists, you need to subscribe to CineFix. They turn out random Top….Whatever lists on a regular basis and they’ve come up with some great ones. I liked this idea so much, I will not actually watch their video until after I publish this post because I made my own top 10 list below based off the same idea. So if they copy my ideas, it’s certainly not my fault. Continue reading The 10 Best Character Entrances of All-Time
As the fifth film in The Terminator franchise looms as the next summer blockbuster, it’s time to run back through the previous installments for the best scenes. 1984’s original Terminator cemented Arnold Schwarzenegger as the premiere action star for over a decade and began a mythology that changed cinematic science fiction forever. That being said, there’s a lot of the film that has not aged well. The film contains some painfully dated practical effects, and that could relegate the film to corny to a series newcomer, but when the T-800 tracks Sarah Connor to an LAPD Station, you realize the terrifying singular destructive capability of these killing machines, not to mention you get one of the most quoted lines in film history.
Alan Taylor (Thor The Dark World, Game of Thrones was recently announced as the director for the fifth installment in the Terminator franchise. Paramount has now set a release date for the film, well, tweaked the original release date. It was supposed to be released on June 26th, 2015, but is now set to hit the big screen a week later on July 1st, 2015.
This will be the first of a new trilogy of films that Arnold Schwarzenegger is attached to star in. The movie is currently being co-written by LaetaKalorgridis (Avatar, Shutter Island) and Patrick Lussier (Drive Angry).
