Jason Bateman’s 10 Best Movies

Jason Bateman

Jason Bateman has had more success at making a career out of being hilariously deadpan since anyone since Bob Newhart.  Bateman was a child star, first appearing way back in 1981 in Little House in the Prairie before, more famously, in Silver Spoons from 1982-1984, and in Valerie from 1986-1991, growing up on the small screen.  Bateman was a journeyman, but quality TV actor until the cult-turned-mainstream success of the wonderfully subversive Arrested Development made him a huge star and also made him in-demand for film roles as well.  He’s had some great comedies, most lately the awesome Game Night, as well as surprising by showing dramatic range in films like Juno, Up in the Air, and The Gift.  As his career nears 40 years already, Bateman has become extremely good at picking projects that showcase his type of laconic humor and expect him to continue to be a fixture on TV and film as long as he wants to act. Idris Elba’s 10 Best Movies

Idris Elba

Idris Elba is an actor whose career has been equally divided between defining roles on both the big and small screens.  A career television actor, Elba broke out in HBO’s The Wire as Stringer Bell and has continued to create and expand one of TV’s best charactes in DCI John Luther for the BBC.  Joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Asgard’s gatekeeper, Heimdall, gave Elba feature film exposure that has caused the actor’s star to continue to rise.  Elba has probably had the best two years of his career over the last two using both his live-action talents in Beasts of No Nation and Molly’s Game as well as the intensity and versatily of his voice in The Jungle Book, Finding Dory, and Zootopia.  Hero or villain, TV or film, voice or full presence, Elba commands the attention of audiences, and his best is yet to come. Octavia Spencer’s 10 Best Movies

Octavia Spencer

Octavia Spencer was primarily a career TV guest star for the first 20 years of her career.  There aren’t many dramas or comedies from the late 1990s to early 2000s that don’t have a guest appearance from Spencer.  She picked up the odd role in films, but it wasn’t until her Oscar-winning turn in The Help that he exploded into one of the best character actresses in Hollywood.  Spencer is almost never the star, but any film is immediately elevated by her presence, versatility, and strength as an actress.  Equally comfortable with drama or comedy, Spencer has a deceptive intensity.  When she fixes her gaze on the target of her character’s focus, she commands not only their attention, but transfixes the audience as well.  With multiple Oscar nominations since breaking out in The Help, Spencer has become one of the most sought after additions to any ensemble cast. Anyone looking to the Golden Globes to shed light on what is one of the murkiest Oscar races in memory walked away with a definite leader, but typical Globes wacky results.  Going into the show there was a pack of five or six films running about even with La La Land and Manchester by the Sea a bit ahead of the others.  The small indie drama Moonlight took home best drama but La La Land regained leader status by winning for best musical or comedy, as well as wins for Director, Actress, Actor, Screenplay, Song, and Score.  When the Oscar nominations are announced, it seems clear that La La Land is going to dominate.  On the TV side, new shows The Crown and Atlanta were honored for drama and comedy as well as for their stars, Claire Foy and Donald Glover.  Read the complete list of nominees and winners below courtesy of Coming Soon. Zootopia Blu Ray and DVD Release Date and Details!!!

Zootopia

Even though it’s still raking in money at the box office (Zootopia is 2016’s highest grossing US film at this writing), Disney is already announced the film’s Blu Ray/DVD release date – June 7th – and special features.  I remember when we had to wait a year to get films on demand.  When I came home from seeing The Jungle Book, Amazon had already sent me an email asking me if I wanted to pre-order it (which I found both creepy and helpful).  See the details below as well as a synopsis of the film and the sloth trailer, because that is still the best scene of the year.
