Set against the backdrop of a series of historic events, Bridge of Spies tells the story of James Donovan (Hanks), a Brooklyn lawyer who finds himself thrust into the center of the Cold War when the CIA sends him on the near-impossible task to negotiate the release of a captured American U-2 pilot. Screenwriters Matt Charman and Ethan Coen & Joel Coen have woven this remarkable experience in Donovan’s life into a story inspired by true events that captures the essence of a man who risked everything and vividly brings his personal journey to life. The film will be released in theaters nationwide on October 16, 2015.
Just saw the trailer on a big screen when I went to see MI:5. It looks fantastic. You and I differ on the quality of films like Munich and (if I remember correctly) Lincoln, but there’s no debating that Spielberg’s really strong films have been way outnumbered by lesser works for a while now. Bridge of Spies looks like it might be one of his best.
I was struck with a little sadness though. I hate to say it, but Pan looks really gloomy and oppressive… yet I recently revisited Hook and it was so much better than I had remembered. Wonderful, really. Right now Hollywood is in desperate need of the Spielberg who made that movie. Not an Adventures of Tintin every now and then, but a steady stream of childlike wonder, making sure that Hollywood never forgets… ever… how to do it. Because right now, Hollywood has forgotten.
M:I 5 was great, BTW. They’ve figured out that because they’re not taken seriously, they’re free to go to over-the-top, ridiculous (in a very good way) places that the 007 franchise no longer dares to visit.
