I don’t think I can remember a non-Comic Con week where so many trailers have dropped like this one. The second trailer for Kong: Skull Island has premiered, and hold on to your butts, people, we’re in for something amazing. I don’t like this trailer as much as the first, and I’m a little worried John C. Reilly’s character is going to Jar Jar this thing, but mostly I’m in awe at how amazing this looks.
I love everything about how this looks, and they did a good job of setting up the situation in the trailer. Kong has a good reason to be pissed at this crew by the time they end up on his island. I’ve talked a little bit about how crowded March 2017 is going to be. It’s insanely crowded. It makes May look trite. Right now this is how March 2017 shakes out, and you’ve seen trailers for most of these films on the site this week.
March 3rd– Logan, Trainspotting 2
March 10th – Kong: Skull Island
March 17th – Beauty and the Beast
March 24th: Power Rangers, King Arthur: Legend of the Sword
March 31st: Ghost in the Shell, Boss Baby, The Zookeeper’s Wife
That is at least one mega-blockbuster every week in the month. There are simply not enough dollars for every one of these films to succeed, even if they’re all great. Right now, May is owned by Disney. They’ve got Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 at the beginning of the month and everyone seems to be getting out of the way of it until Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales opens at the end of the month. I would not be surprised if at least one of these behemoths moves to mid-May, where they might have a better chance. People aren’t used to looking to the movies every week in March. Something is going to bomb spectacularly if this schedule holds and it isn’t going to be Beauty and the Beast. I seriously doubt it will be Kong: Skull Island either, but putting those two back-to-back seems more like brinkmanship than smart planning. Kong: Skull Island stars Brie Larson, John Goodman, Samuel L. Jackson, Tom Hiddleston, John C. Reilly, and others and will open, as I mentioned, on March 10, 2017.
I actually like this trailer better than the first one. It looks like they really went full-on Apocalypse Now, and I hope they were careful with John C. Riley, because he’s channeling one of Dennis Hopper’s greatest roles.
We all know the Arthur movie is going to bomb, but looking at the movies that have an actual shot at being good, I’m afraid Ghost in the Shell is going to draw the short straw. It’s by far the least-known property, and it comes at the tail end of the month. If two of these movies bomb, Power Rangers bombs too, but right now the smart money is on GITS, which looks like one of the coolest things I have ever seen. Sigh.

My money is on Ghost in the Shell bombing spectacularly (no offense to Scarlett Johannson, but I prefer the original)

I think it would be best served by moving. But if its at the end of the month it at least has some breathing room. My knowledge of it is extremely limited so reviews will be crucial. Thanks for the comment. Love your blog btw.
