In Theaters This Week (9/09/2016) – Sully, When the Bough Breaks, The Wild Life, The Disappointments Room

When The Bough Breaks

Each Thursday we look at what is going to be coming out in theaters this weekend, show you the trailers for the big releases, predict the box office winner and just generally give you enough of a carrot to pull you through the rest of the work week.  September 9th kicks off a September so unusually strong that it’s actually a more intriguing slate of films than October sports.  The biggest opener is the Tom Hanks/Clint Eastwood film about “The Miracle on the Hudson”: Sully, but there are three other new films looking to end Don’t Breathe‘s reign at the box office. Trailer Time: Sully IMAX Trailer *Brace for Impact!*

On January 15, 2009, the world witnessed the “Miracle on the Hudson” when Captain “Sully” Sullenberger glided his disabled plane onto the frigid waters of the Hudson River, saving the lives of all 155 aboard. However, even as Sully was being heralded by the public and the media for his unprecedented feat of aviation skill, an investigation was unfolding that threatened to destroy his reputation and his career.

“Sully” also stars Aaron Eckhart (“Olympus Has Fallen,” “The Dark Knight”) as Sully’s co-pilot, Jeff Skiles, and Oscar nominee Laura Linney (“The Savages,” “Kinsey,” Showtime’s “The Big C”) as Sully’s wife, Lorraine Sullenberger. Sully opens September 9, 2016.

Look, if you want someone to play a heroic captain, you need to ask Tom Hanks if he wants to do it first before shopping it around, because it’s kind of his thing.  Apollo 13 and Captain Phillips both saw Hanks receive Oscar nominations for playing captains in extraordinary situations.  He and Clint Eastwood now tackle one of the most amazing miracles in aviation history: The Miracle on the Hudson (which probably a better title for the film than “Sully”).  Two things give me pause.  One, why is the first trailer or press of any kind for what seems like an Oscar contender only being released two months before release.  Two, why is that release in the traditional dead-zone of September (though if you look at the line-up for this September, it’s the strongest I can remember for that traditional dumping ground).  This was a genuine miracle, and honest-to-goodness real life Hollywood story that played out before our eyes on TV (much like Captain Phillips).  Let’s hope Eastwood brought his American Sniper game to the director’s chair rather than his Jersey Boys fiasco.  Sully opens September 9, 2016.

Movie Review: Mr. Holmes (2015) *McKellan’s Masterpiece*

Ian McKellan, Sherlock Holmes, Mr. Holmes
Sherlock Holmes is one of the greatest creations in all of fiction.  Like the best characters, he’s been interpreted on the page, stage, screen and currently stars in one of the best shows to grace TV in years under the stewardship of Benedict Cumberbatch.  You would think that with so many tales of his adventures that nothing new was left to be done with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s master detective, but you would be wrong.  Mr. Holmes tells a tale of Sherlock that we’ve never seen before, and thanks to a cunning script, deft direction and a performance for the ages by Ian McKellan, 2015 has another perfect film. Trailer Time: Mr. Holmes Trailer #2 (2015) *Peerless Actor Meets Ultimate Role”

Here’s one to look forward to this summer!  Ian McKellan plays an aged Sherlock Holmes in the 1940’s, trying to solve the one case that’s eluded him his entire career.  It’s directed by Chicago’s Bill Condon and stars Milo Parker and Laura Linney.  No firm US release date has been announced past it being slated for Summer 2015.  Arthur Conan Doyle’s detective remains one of the most versatile and endlessly fascinating characters in all of fiction, and I can’t wait to see McKellan add this to his already distinguished career. Mr. Holmes opens wide on July 19, 2015.
