The Mummy

Trailer Time: The Mummy Trailer #2 (2017) *The Universal Monsterverse Begins Here*

The Mummy
Thought safely entombed in a crypt deep beneath the unforgiving desert, an ancient queen (Sofia Boutella of Kingsman: The Secret Service and Star Trek Beyond) whose destiny was unjustly taken from her, is awakened in our current day, bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia and terrors that defy human comprehension.

From the sweeping sands of the Middle East through hidden labyrinths under modern-day London, The Mummy brings a surprising intensity and balance of wonder and thrills in an imaginative new take that ushers in a new world of gods and monsters.

Cruise is joined by a cast including Annabelle Wallis (upcoming King Arthur, television’s Peaky Blinders), Jake Johnson (Jurassic World), Courtney B. Vance (TV’s American Crime Story: The People V. O.J. Simpson) and Oscar winner Russell Crowe (Gladiator).

Coming to theaters on June 9, 2017, The Mummy is directed by Alex Kurtzman, who also produces alongside Chris Morgan (Fast & Furious series, Wanted) and Sean Daniel (The Mummy trilogy, The Best Man series). Jon Spaihts and Christopher McQuarrie wrote the screenplay, and Bobby Cohen executive produces. It’s being planned as the first film in the Universal Monster cinematic universe with plans for The Wolfman, The Invisible ManBride of Frankenstein, and Van Helsing all in various stages of development.

  1. Dave, I have to admit it looks fun.

But I wish these were going to be straight-up horror films.

The old universal monster movies had such a unique atmosphere. I’m obviously not asking for these new films to mimic that same sense of style, but I wish this did not feel so generic. I wish they were introducing us to a whole new world, and not just a series of action/horror/emphasis-on-horror hybrids with classic monsters in them.

    1. Well, that would certainly be an interesting take, but the fact is that a horror film in the 1930’s is very, very different than what passes for one now. I think elements of horror in an action setting is probably the best way to go, and some characters can get more of a balance than others. When Crowe gets his Jekyll/Hyde film, there’s a film you can weigh more heavily on horror. But to wipe the slate from the Brendan Fraser/Rock/Rachel Weisz years you need a huge star and some candy to start it going and I’ve been really surprised by how much I’ve liked these two trailers. This may be a sleeper standout.

      1. I’m not asking for the 1930’s monster movie style, I’m just asking for A style. Any aesthetic at all. A singular take on these characters and their world, that makes them scary again. And how do you make them scary again, after they’ve spent so many years in the realm of the ridiculous? You actually have to do some hard work, hire a visionary or two.

Of course I’m going to see this new Mummy, if only for Tom Cruise. I’m an fan, as you know. And I wish this shared universe well, because I’ve loved these characters all my life. I want horror movies, though. Horror movies. There was a time when Boris Karloff’s Mummy gave people nightmares. There was a time when he was an icon. This new Mummy is going to wish she was iconic. I’m sure when Crowe gets on board things will start looking better, but they’re starting with The Mummy, and clearly this is their vision.

Again, good trailer, not a bad-looking movie. I just wish Hollywood would take just a tiny risk on certain things a tiny bit more often.
