Killing Time Passes 500,000 Hits: The Most Popular Pieces in the Site’s History

Killing Time

On January 24, 2013, I started a blog on media to pass the time (you can click on About Killing Time if you want the entire dynamic origin story).  This morning, during the wee hours, that site passed half-a-million hits.  500,000 hits, baby!  That’s just on KT, not the social media pages, but if you had told me when I was starting out that we’d ever get to 1/2 a million hits, I’d have upped your thorazine.  I saw the number creeping toward the milestone a month ago, as I’ve noticed we’re also nearing 10k followers (you geeky legion, you).  I had no idea it was that high, and I just want to sincerely thank every one of you who makes this a fun site to write, manage, micromanage, rearrange and then re-micromanage, and for the comments, support, and sense of community that has-especially this year-made this such an awesome place to be.

No doubt the morning shows are all over this, but I thought I’d share just a few of the reader reactions to the news.  SO kind (thank you for the mic drop, Mr. President).  After the break check out the most read articles in the site’s history.

Site Note: Review Archives Are Alphabetized!!! HOORAY, DAVE! UPDATED

AZ-logo

It all began with a rather innocent, passive aggressive comment from devoted KT reader and sage Mr. Bobinsky, “It would be nice if these were in some kind of order….”  Mr. B was referring to the archives, specifically the Movie Review Archives, the digital vault in which my wisdom regarding individual films is kept.  Regular features and columns as well as media that we regular feature (trailers, achievement lists, etc.) are kept in archive pages that you can see in a banner across the top of the home page.

Killing Time is now 4.75 years old and the insides of those archives are beginning to become unwieldy to navigate.  So, if you visit the Movie Review Archive (Their 10 Best and IMDB 250 are already in order) you will now find reviews listed from A to Z along with the year of their release.  You’ll note that the reviews from Killing Time (which stretch from late 2012 to present) are also joined by a group from a Live Journal blog I ran for a year in 2009-2010.  So it’s a little bit of a grab bag, and looking a the number of films I used to review versus what I do these days, I’m going to try to do at least one or two a week.

I also want to alphabetize the Trailers, My Favorite Scenes, Lists, Achievement Lists, and other features, but it is MIND numbing, and despite what rumors you may have heard, my army of enchanted gnomes is currently still in labor arbitration with me over working conditions.  So should you go in an archive and it looks like a vat of letters exploded, I’m probably cobbling together new shelves for my digital creations.  Just part of the site getting older and bigger (don’t know if anyone’s noticed, but we may hit 500,000 hits on the home page alone by the end of 2017!).  Thanks, Mr. B.  It was a good idea that will no doubt keep me cutting and pasting for months (but will look purty in the end.

UPDATE: Gamers, the Achievement List page is now alphabetized!!!
UPDATE 2: The My Favorite Scene page is now alphabetized!!!

No formal “In theaters” Column This Week

Every now and again the messy business of reality intrudes its way into my writing schedule and knocks it right the heck off track.  I have an extremely …life-intensive weekend upcoming that will may see sparse posting until Monday.  Can’t be avoided.  Well, in this case, I actually HAVE avoided it successfully for quite a long time, but my intentionally vague…thing does not dovetail well with breezy, witty cinema banter.

And, no, it is not my annual depression following the release of yet another Transformers film that makes me launch into my “LET’S SHOOT MICHAEL BAY INTO THE SUN!” speech.  Though….imagine the YouTube traffic for that video.  Given that the current fifth installment in slowly curb-stomping my childhood involves Transformers interacting with King Arthur, and that they’ve STUCK MY LAST NAME ON THE MAIN HUMAN CHARACTER IN THIS FARCE, I could easily go into my annual apoplexy….but, no, we’re breathing, we’re breathing, aaaand there.  Transformers: The Last Knight will win the weekend, but its take looks like the record-low reviews (even for Transformers sequels) are catching up with it, but-have no fear-as China seems to love our crappiest films, there will be more than enough overseas gross to continue my annual torment.  Cars 3 had an underwhelming opening for Pixar, and I am wondering how much of a drop it will see in week 2.  I’m expecting Wonder Woman to keep holding strong with repeat business.  Sequel insanity continues next week with Despicable Me 3, which will get an actual column, not a rant (well the rant may be INSIDE the column).  Stab the minutes, time killers, stab the minutes.

Site Note: KT Undergoing Upgrade

Greetings, Time Killers!  You may have noticed some tweaks to the home page.  I’m moving some things around, trying some new things, and so if stuff looks wonky….I’m probably in the middle of messing the entire site up.  Perfectly normal.  One thing to note for people who read the Word Press page only, I’ve divided up the workload because I spend 1-2 hours a day on this blog and I can’t get to everything.  Casting news, posters, pictures, and general news will get published to the Facebook page (www.facebook.com/killingtime2014) or to the Twitter feed (@sleeplessdave), which now displays the last 10 news items on the site for those who hate Facebook and Twitter (there are enough of you that I am writing this, so you know who you are).  The addition of the Twitter widget will give WP site only readers the same kind of total access the Facebook horde gets.  The things I do for you all.  Keep stabbing minutes, you wacky little wombats, you!

In Theaters This Week (5/26/2017): Pirates 5, Baywatch, War Machine

Each Thursday we look at what is going to be coming out in theaters this weekend, show you the trailers for the big releases, predict the box office winner and just generally give you enough of a carrot to pull you through the rest of the work week.  Memorial Day Weekend doesn’t exactly bring huge game to the theaters as we have a leaky franchise, a campy remake, and Netflix’s first terrifying shot across the bow of movie theaters.
