It’s been awhile since we’ve seen Thor and Hulk. The former left on a quest to discover what was going on with the Infinity Gems (as we know Thanos is collecting them for his gauntlet), and Hulk flew off in the Quinjet after Black Widow broke his big, green heart. Thor 3, entitled Thor: Ragnarok, returns us to Asgard and it is a changed place indeed. Loki deposed Odin at the end of Thor: The Dark World, and it seems he’s lost his own place to Hela (Cate Blanchett), the Queen of the Norse Underworld. If Marvel has a consistent criticism it’s that it has focused on its heroes nearly to the exclusion of developing iconic villains (Loki aside). Hela is on a very different level of power than Loki or Malekith and she demonstrates that about 20 seconds into this awesome first look at the Marvel fall film.
Each Thursday we look at what is going to be coming out in theaters this weekend, show you the trailers for the big releases, predict the box office winner and just generally give you enough of a carrot to pull you through the rest of the work week. Week 2 of March Movie Madness only has one major release, but when you’re the size of Kong, one will do. Continue reading In Theaters This Week (3/10/2017): Kong Skull Island→
Well, if Kong: Skull Island accomplishes nothing else, it will have made some of the best-produced, most stylish, gorgeously cinematic trailers of recent years. I really liked Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla, but this looks ten times better and if it is, and they can make a showdown film between these monsters as epic as this looks….then we will have achieved true monster awesomeness. Kong Skull Island is Film #2 in March Movie Madness 2017 and opens March 10, 2017. Continue reading Trailer Time: Kong Skull Island Trailer #3 (2017) *KONG!*→
I don’t think I can remember a non-Comic Con week where so many trailers have dropped like this one. The second trailer for Kong: Skull Island has premiered, and hold on to your butts, people, we’re in for something amazing. I don’t like this trailer as much as the first, and I’m a little worried John C. Reilly’s character is going to Jar Jar this thing, but mostly I’m in awe at how amazing this looks. August’s poll asked the question, “Who’s the best baddie so far?” when it comes to the 13 films and four TV series that have so far made up the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Marvel bucked the established trend in comic movies before Iron Man, which was that the villain was the centerpiece of the film and the hero’s journey was shaped by their adversary. Marvel’s films and series are very much hero-centric. The readers had no doubt as to whom the top villain was. Tom Hiddleston’s god of mischief was the star of Phase One of the MCU, and continued to expand his character in Phase Two, and I’m sure will have an impact in Phase Three both in Thor: Ragnarok, but in the Infinity War, as well.
