Jeremy Renner and Jon Hamm in TAG

Tag Trailer #1 (2018) *A Game 30 Years in the Making*

After the awesomeness earlier this year that was Game Night, is it too much to dream we may have another comedy on the way?  The premise for Tag, which is reputedly a true story (which I would love to know more about), is that it’s a game of tag among five friends that has now gone on for 30 years and has turned their lives into an absolute frenzy of opportunistic mayhem.  It has a great cast with Jeremy Renner, Jon Hamm (who is so much more funny than he is even a great dramatic actor), Ed Helms, Isla Fisher, and Rashida Jones among others.  The trailer really made me laugh, and if they can sustain that kind of absurdity through a whole film-always the trick with comedies even those with a great premise-then this should be a fun addition to an already packed June schedule.  Tag is scheduled for a June 15, 2018 release.  YOU’RE IT!

  1. They had me at Jeremy Renner. He’ll always be the unsung Avenger, though of course he isn’t if you’re more than a casual fan.

A game of tag that’s lasted thirty years. That sounds almost as bad as Tony Soprano, forever looking over his shoulder. I have to give the filmmakers credit; I thought every premise had been done before, in one form or another, but a totally original idea has been uncovered.

    1. Apparently its based on a true story (in case that wasn’t emphasized enough) which I really hope they tell over the credits, because it’s exactly the sort of idiot thing my friends and I might have fallen into. It’s such a brilliant premise with so many possibilities since they apparently have no qualms about how they go about tagging people (weddings, funerals, etc.). I love that, after initially having been introduced to him as Don Draper on Mad Men, possibly one of the least humorous characters ever, that I discovered Jon Hamm is, in fact, a giant doofball. From being the idiot boyfriend on 30 Rock, to constantly showing up on SNL just to be an idiot, you find out his actual personality is so far removed from Mad Men that it makes his acting there all the more impressive.

      1. I got that it was based on a true story, but even in a world this big, it’s hard to find stories that are simultaneously this weird and this potentially entertaining.

Want some fun? Look up “Sealand.” If you’ve never heard of this, you will be amazed, and also amazed that it has never been turned into a major motion picture.

      1. Heh, heh, heh …that’s right, she did give him some serious side-eye when he said he was done. Like, ‘sure, honey. Whatever you say, honey’. 😀

  2. It occurs to me that this concept could easily be turned into a thriller instead of a comedy. As the years go on, the game of tag gets more and more serious, and the players grow embittered. By the end, they’re trying to kill each other.

“There can only be one,” like in Highlander.

The filmmakers are going to make a lot more money their way.

  3. In Star Trek Voyager, Captain Janeway should have slowly lost her mind as the series went on.
