Movie Review: The Greatest Showman (2017) *Not the Greatest But Pretty Darn Good*

Hugh Jackman as P.T. Barnum in The Greatest Showman
You know there’s been a massive shift in the way Hollywood views musicals when a blockbuster Christmas release is marketed on the back of lyricists.  The Greatest Showman, Hugh Jackman’s first film post-Wolverine, is a musical “biopic” of circus pioneer and American showman P.T. Barnum.  It’s songs are brought to you by the team of lyricists that worked with composer Justin Hurwitz to make La La Land’s magic last year.  The Greatest Showman is, by no means, another La La Land.  That film was one of strongest films in every aspect of the last few years.  The Greatest Showman can be heavy-handed and overly earnest, but it’s well-meaning and charming and-in the end-your opinion of the film probably will rise or fall with how much you like those songs touted on the movie’s poster.   Continue reading Movie Review: The Greatest Showman (2017) *Not the Greatest But Pretty Darn Good*

The Greatest Showman Trailer #2 (2017) “This Is Me”

Hugh Jackman’s first film of his post-Wolverine career will be a routine to his roots: musicals.  An unknown song and dance man before becoming a household name thanks to his iconic portrayal of Wolverine in the X-Men films, Jackman will be headlining the big holiday musical of 2017.  With the songwriters of La La Land, will The Greatest Showman, starring Jackman as circus legend P.T. Barnum be able to duplicate that film’s success?  To listen to the full version of the song “This Is Me” by Keana Settle, which will be going head-to-head with Beauty and the Beast’s contributions come Oscar time, scroll down.  It’s literally playing on loop in my head and has been for days.  Co-starring Zac Efron, Michelle Williams, Rebecca Ferguson, and Zendaya, The Greatest Showman will open Christmas Day.  Read more below from Coming Soon.

The Greatest Show on Earth Trailer #1 (2017) “No One Ever Made a Difference by Being Like Everyone Else”

Jackman’s only Oscar nomination was for leading the cast of the big screen adaptation of Les Miserables, so this is familiar territory, the only question is can a first-time director deliver?  The first trailer looks very promising.  Co-starring Zac Efron, Michelle Williams, Rebecca Ferguson, and Zendaya, The Greatest Showman will open Christmas Day.  Read more below from Coming Soon.

Iron Man Will Be in 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming

Iron Man, Tony Stark, Robert Downey Jr., Captain America: Civil War

Variety broke the story that Robert Downey Jr. has been added to the cast of 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming.  We don’t know how big the role is in the film, or if he’ll be suiting up, but the comics have explored the natural bond between the two characters as inventors in the past.  Also leaked this week was that the film’s villain looked to be the Vulture and Michael Keaton was in negotiations to join the cast, but those seem to have broken down.

Spider-Man, Iron Man

What strikes me as weird is that Marvel would let this leak so soon before Captain America: Civil War.  Obviously, it implies that Stark is going to survive the conflict.  If they stick to the comic storyline, that would be the case, but the MCU has been known to flip some things on their head.  I don’t know why they didn’t sit on this until after the release of the film.  At any rate, Robert Downey Jr. was not contracted for anything further than Avengers: Infinity War I & II so Disney must be paying him a metric ton of money to appear in the film.  It also cements the Spider-Man solo films firmly in the MCU even with Sony’s quasi-involvement, Marvel is clearly making the creative decisions.  Spider-Man: Homecoming is scheduled for release on July 7, 2017.
